weak blacks with UT7

2005-04-30 by m_r_tomlinson

I've just installed UT7 inks in my 2200 (eboni black), but I get
really weak blacks using the Paul Roark smooth pearl and epson glossy
curves on Ilford/epson paper respectively. Images also look a bit
grainy. I have tried printing on matte papers (EEM) and this seems
fine with either curves or using QTR. I must be doing something wrong,
but I can't figure out what. I previously used the UT2 inks in a 1290
without problems using the same glossy papers.

I am using XP, setting space=adobe RGB, same as source, in PS. 1440
dpi, EEM paper, high speed off, no colour correction in the driver. I
get perfect nozzle checks.

Anyone any ideas?

Mark,

Is this the standard Epson driver from a CD or downloaded from Epson? There
are drivers that ship with XP that often don't work as well.

If the curves on matte paper work, I would think the glossy curves would
also work. The settings are the same. I assume there is no dullness in the
blacks as if the Eboni is printing. What precise paper and curve are you
using?

Re: [Digital BW] weak blacks with UT7

Hi

Thanks for responding.

I've tried both the driver off the CD for the 2100 (I'm in the UK) and
the downloaded driver for the 2200 from the US site (it makes no
difference). I've tried the neutral, cool and warm curves for the
Ilford smooth pearl downloaded from your website today. And I've tried
the neutral curve for epson glossy photo paper. I get the same weak
blacks whatever curve or paper I choose.

I printed a couple of prints on EEM with both the driver and QTR; and
one on HPR using QTR and they are OK so I think the inks are in the
correct positions. I never had this problem with the UT2 inks on my
1290 (smooth pearl was my main paper). I'm completely at a loss on
this one.

Mark

Mark,

I'll send you purge patterns off list just to be sure the inks are loaded
correctly. The curves should be pouring C & M into the 100% K spots just
like your UT2. So, the results should be the same.
