Evolution of the Epson 4000?

Evolution of the Epson 4000?

2005-05-01 by Jean-Marc Humbert

Heard from an Epson top level manager in Europe that the current Epson
4000 shall have a sister in the next months, something like a 4400 or
4800 with a new additional grey cart (it would mean that the new 4000
would have 9 carts with two different blacks and two different grey).
Isn't it great news?

Of course this is to be considered as rather informal and prelimary but
considered the rank of the guy, I do not think that this is a pure
European rumor.

Best regards

JM Humbert

The June issue of Shutterbug already has mentioned that, page 159.

Sounds like people are expecting an announcment by Epson tomorrow (May
02).

I hope so!

Epson Europe already have it..
http://esupport.epson-europe.com/ProductHome.aspx?lng=en-GB&data=7D3D3DF1BB158B5E00238C1BAE906BD0B3981CDAE87855A5A7F7EA2C8F1C4335

Epson 2400/4800/7800/9800..
8 colour..
Slot 1 is MK or PK.. so one or the other..
Slot 5 is LK
Slot 8 is LLK

No GO, no R/B..

It seems like a matte printer with just ink/firmware/driver change
from the last generation 2200/4000/... series.

Michael,

Very interesting:

Looks like the 4400 is a CMYK printer.

The 4800 has Black, Light black, and light, light black.

By my meaning there are two main problems in inkjet printing using
pigment inks (=> stability on many kinds of media, not only special
ones):

1. the metamerie, bronzing, BW printing, etc

2. the relatively small gamut

- the solution of first problem is to print as much as possible from
neutral inks (maximal possible GCR)

- the solution of second problem is GO or RB inks

So maybe we should wait one more generation of Epsons Pro printers
for combination of both features.

I can't understand why we haven't heard one from Epson yet.

I don't understand it.

Maybe Epson is looking for the "buzz".

Seems like the only new things are one additional black ink, new
firmware, and a driver. Despite these simple mods, I doubt that
current 4000 owners will be offered an upgrade (sidegrade?) path.
Smells a lot like the business model Gretag is also using with their
"new" i1 Photo package. Keep the same hardware, add some new
firmware features and re-package as "new and improved".

To me, it's a step backward because the 4800 will not hold PK AND MK at
the same time: It's one or the other.
