PKN with UT-1

PKN with UT-1

2005-05-06 by mambo445

Is anyone using UT-1 (with QTR)? I have been using UT7 with Roarks'
curves and QTR with great success on EEM. But now I am looking for
more neutral semi-gloss or glossy prints.

I am thinking about using the MIS-PKN with UT-1 (with QTR for 2200.)
Will this combination give me a more neutral print on semi-gloss? Or
will the standard MIS-PK do the same with the toner?

Thank for any inputs you might have.

UT1 is not made for the 2200. It is an upgrade of the old VM inkset and is
mostly for the older printers.

If you meant UT7, then PKN would give you more neutral deep shadows (95% -
100%) than PK, if you use curves that use the black ink. I generate blacks
with UT7 by using the dark gray inks. With these, Eboni can be installed --
or anything for that matter -- in the K position, because it is not used.
With the 2 dark grays, curves can give neutral deep shadows also.

So, in general, I don't even support PK or PKN in the 2200. From my
perspective it is only called for if one wants to print on glossy paper
using sliders, for example if printing from a non-Photoshop, non-rip
application.

Paul,
I'm surprised to hear that your curves dont use the K position ink. I
was under the impression that the carbon curves for example used K, C
& LC. Am I wrong?

I guess UT-1 is different from UT inkset listed below

MIS site listed it as "2200 ULTRATONE CARTRIDGES FOR BOWHAUS OR
QUADTONE RIP". This is not the old VM upgrade, is it?

The above UT inkset for 2200 has 2 blacks and 3 grays and 2 toners. I
can give up sepia and use GLOP in place of the sepia toner.

For glossy, is it a good idea to use PKN + 3grays (25-50-75) + 1cool
toner work using QTR?

For matte, I will use Eboni + 3grays (25-50-75) + 1cool toner using QTR?

I read the Roark's Lab again more closely and I saw that you are
recommending PKN for BO prints.

I also read that the cool toner has problem cooling shadows with PK
ink. This is why I thought maybe PKN can be used for the 95%-100%.
Cool Toner can be used for the < 95% 3grays (25-50-75).

Another question, is PK same ink between MIS-UC and MIS-UT7 inksets?
MIS has so many inks, with the same name. Thanks.

OK, I see where the confusion is. MIS made an inkset for the 2200 and
Bowhaus that it called the "UT" for the 2200. I'm not sure there is much
reason for this inkset now that the UT7 is out there. I don't support the
"UT" that is arranged in this manner.

With UT7 you don't need the PK.

The "UT" for 2200 that you're describing uses, I think, the UT 1 cool toner,
but no light toner. You get smoother tones with 2 cool toners.

In some circumstances, it might make a very easy way to have color and B&W
from a single printer while still using the Epson driver.

Yes, with standard PK, you'll have a warm cross-over at 95%.

Yes.

The MIS PK is the same wherever it is used. It usually is not used with the
UT7. Eboni matte black is standard in that inkset, because the dark grays
are used to generate the black on glossy paper.

Too many inks is one of their main problems. This UT for 2200 ought to be
eliminated, in my view.
