Eboni Inks and My New Epson C86

Eboni Inks and My New Epson C86

2005-05-10 by oohlalaland

I'm wondering if there's a solution. I decided to test black and white
printing on the C86 to learn it and then move on to the 2200. After
pouring over the board here, I ordered the MIS inks (eboni, cyan,
magenta, yellow). I've just installed everything and I can't get this
more than a (literal) banded shadow of black (pale, pale, pale) to
print. The colors simply won't print on the test page. Has anyone run
into this? Is there a solution? I shook the inks, snapped them in and
I can't guess what's wrong. I've installed printers and replaced inks
many times. Thanks....Madeleine

Try waiting a few hours. I no longer shake the inks before
I put them in. But you may well have a more serious problem.

I've been futzing (learning about) QTR, and with that comparison
in mind, I can't speak highly enough of the simplicity and results
one can get with the simple C86 setup. Don't give up hope. I had
one clogging nightmare, but that was on a printer that sat idle for
months through a long illness. Lately, my C86 has been working
like a champ, and I just make sure to print a test image every
week when I'm not in printing mode.

Best of luck.

[Digital BW] Eboni Inks and My New Epson C86

2005-05-10 by oohlalaland

Scott, thanks for your reassuring reply. The printer and inks are both
just out of the box. What would be the more serious problem? Is there
any way of finding out if this is a more serious problem? I played
with this for six hours and I simply don't know know what to check
now. Thanks, Madeleine

Well, you could have either a defective cart or a defective printer.

A couple of ideas.

(1) Do a nozzle check (through the Epson print control utility) and
see what comes out. All kinds of possibilities. See if one or more
inks doesn't print at all.

(2) Put in the color cartridges that came with the printer and print
something out. Don't worry about color accuracy or anything. Just
print some snapshot and see if it works.

(3) Run just one cleaning cycle and wait an hour or two. Then try
the nozzle check again. See what comes out.

(4) What kind of paper are you using?

Report back on your progress.

Re: [Digital BW] Eboni Inks and My New Epson C86

2005-05-11 by oohlalaland

Scott, Thanks so much for helping with this.
I'm using Epson matte paper heavyweight. I took out all the inks
and put in the Epson inks and they printed. I then took a second
cartridge of Eboni black and left the colors from Epson in the slots,
picked an image and printed black only (gamma 2.2) and it is amazing.
The blacks are so black and the whites are so white. I've been test
printing all afternoon. Thanks for your help and support. Happily,
Madeleine
(Cannot wait for the 2400 to come out!!!)

Glad to hear you got something working. C86 isn't considered
the greated BO printer (I'm no expert here). If you can setup
the other inks one at a time

(1) It might all work out and then you can print quad (!) or

(2) You can find the defective ink cart and MIS is supposed
to be very good about sending out replacements right away.

Best of luck and happy printing.

Re: [Digital BW] Eboni Inks and My New Epson C86

2005-05-11 by oohlalaland

Scott, Thanks again for your help.
After maybe six black only really contrasty prints
yesterday, it's printing faded and so much lighter.
The colors (now from the epson inks..none of the MIS inks
ever printed)are vivid and strong.
The Eboni ink levels show at 75%. I did nozzle checks
and all the diagnostics. They all show banding.
I'd hoped that I'd be able to spend lots of time understanding
how to print, not trying to get it to print.
Thanks again, Madeleine
