Epson 2400 thought

Epson 2400 thought

2005-05-11 by Bernie Ess

Hi,
I haven't got the time to read all messages on this list, but one of
my first thoughts for this 8 cart- printer was to make it work with
UT7 (on a CFS) plus GLOP in the 8th position. This would make this
printer great for semigloss and glossy paper.
With the 2100/2200 one would have to sacrifice one color for the GLOP,
the 2400 would allow to use all 7 colors. Shouldn't be to difficult.

Of course one would have to wait how the UC3 inks work, maybe they
come closer to the holy grail of inkjet printing, but with a high
output there is still the price issue - at least for me - I always
found the cartridges too expensive to change them all the time which
is inevitable when printing 11x14 or even 13x19. Here in Europe we pay
considerably more for Epson carts than you do in the US: The current
avarage price for a 2100 cart is 17 Euro (about 21,7 USD). I wont pay
that, as long as I am not paid for my prints.

Regards, Bernie

The 2400 is 9-cart printer, isn't it.

Yes, it's a 9 cart printer. The specifications are slightly confusing, in that it's been referred
to as an 8-color printer.

Ed/Martin,

It's both 8 and 9 cart!! It has 9 different cartridges, but only takes 8 at
a time. You have to choose between the photo and matte blacks, as in the
2100/2200.

The 2400 only holds 8 carts. You have to switch MK and PK, as with
the 2200.

I would swear that somewhere I read that the 2400 can hold both blacks simultaneously.
But the photo-i.co.uk illustration clearly shows 8 carts. Ah well....

You probably read Michael Reichmann's preview article on LLS:

As I understand it, it's an 8 cartridge printer but a
ninth cartridge must replace one of the black
cartridges when you want to print black and white.
That means you must buy nine cartridges instead of
eight. It also means every time you switch from B@W
to Color, you must purge the one black line which will
cost about $10 in ink each time you do it. Thus,
switching from B@W to Color is costly if you do it
very often. PLUS, the hassle! So for some of us who
like to print B@W and Color, and who often do it the
same day, this is a caveat.
Just my impression.

I talked to someone standing in front of a 9800 while prints were coming out and he said
he didn't know how they did it, but that there was essentially no gloss differential.

and the 2400 uses the same inks I think???

on ink price, it doesn't take a ton of printing to make a 4800 more economical than a
2400 since the big cart ink is so much cheaper. And consider that the 4800 will come
with maybe $500 worth of ink, so the "net price" is more like 1800-500=1300.

All prices US.

Ed,
According to Epson specs, as I understood them, it is
a printer that holds eight not nine cartridges. If
you look at the pictures of the new printer, you can
clearly see that it holds only eight cartridges.

Joe,

Not so! The two carts that you can swap are the Photo Black and the Matte
Black. You don't have to swap them to print B&W. Photo Black is OK for
printing on all papers, in B&W and color. The Matte black cart simply gives
you a darker black on matte papers for B&W and color if you are a matte
paper enthusiast. The matte black ink is no good for glossy papers.

Just like the 2200/2100.
