Anyone use Lyson Inks?

Anyone use Lyson Inks?

2005-05-16 by fisherrcan

Anyone here use Lyson inks? If so, have you had any problems with
their customer service?

I'm expecting delivery soon of a used Epson 1280 that I'm considering
turning into a b&w printer. The products I'm looking at are the Lyson
Small Gamut and their new Daylight Darkroom. I've read conflicting
information on compatibility of the Daylight Darkroom product with the
1280. To try and resolve I've emailed both the U.S. and UK offices of
Lyson and have had no response in over a week. If this is SOP for
their customer service, then I'll look for another product.

Thanks.

I have no personal experience but Lyson has a reputation for poor customer

Stay away from the Small Gamut inkset. I used it for 4 years. That is old
technology and does not perform as well as current UC with a rip like QTR.
The new Epson printers to soon be released or MiS quads or Cone quads are
much better in all respeces. Take it from someone who has been there.

All of these Lyson monochrome inksets exhibit metamerism and yes, their
customer service is poor to non-existant. Compare that to Media Street where
you get a response the day you send a message. I just wrote them both about
an issues with the 10K carts. Lyson doesn't respond, Media Street finds the
person who is knowledgeable and he writes me. That is the difference
between a company that cares about its customers and one that doesn't.

Thanks for the quick replies folks. I've looked at the MIS products
casually but not in any great depth. The thing I didn't like about
them if I recall (it's been a while since I investigated) was that it
seemed to be difficult to get a truly neutral b&w with them. I think
you had to go warm, cool or carbon sepia. I was also concerned about
the print life with the MIS inks I think. I'll have another look
though. Maybe they've come out with something new since I last checked
them out.

I know the Small Gamut is an older product but it was a definite second
place to the new Daylight Darkroom product.

The Daylight Darkroom was designed for the 2200/7600/9600 printers and is
not available for the 1280. There is more information about the system on
my site at http://www.adventurecamphoto.com/lysondd.htm including a link to
the Daylight Darkroom site.

It can be difficult to get responses from Lyson at times because they have a
small staff in the US. If you work with a dealer like myself who does
business through their distribution system, you can be put in touch with a
tech support person that will answer your questions. If you or anyone on
the list needs assistance with Lyson products, contact me offline, and I
will pass along the tech support contact information.

Re: Anyone use Lyson Inks?

2005-05-17 by fisherrcan

Thanks Michael. It may well be true that Lyson's staff in the U.S.
is small but that's not my problem. As I said in my initial message,
I did email their UK head office as well. All they needed to do was
respond and tell me 'No, the Daylight Darkroom isn't compatible with
the 1280 but some of our other products are and if you view the Lyson
Disributors page on our website at <insert link> you'll be able to
find a dealer in your area (although apparently there's only one in
Canada) who can help you choose the best one for your needs. Thank
you.' That would take about 60 seconds to write so a small staff is
a poor excuse for poor service.

I didn't think that the Daylight Darkroom product was available for
the 1280 but then I subsequently read in a reputable publication
(Photo Techniques) that it was; hence my motivation to contact them.

That said, I've done some more looking at the MIS products and they
may fit the bill so thanks to those who recommended them. I've
emailed back and forth a couple times today with one of their support
staff who's been very helpful and responsive - even telling me I
could do something slightly unconventional with the ink set-up which
is rare for a manufacturer to do. I still have concerns about print
longevity and will have to try to research that some more but I do
see that their newer UT2 inkset is variable tone and a dead neutral
result is possible.
