Unfortunately none of these new features can be used by those of us who purchased eye-one
photo package last year or earlier. Same hardware but they won't let you upgrade the
firmware to access the profile editor (when it becomes available) nor the digital camera
module.

I know this is policy but are you sure? I did not have to enter anything in
order to gain access to the digital camera module....

Is the check when you register to download or something?

See this long thread on Gailbraith's color managment forum back in March. Look for the
"official" post in that thread from the GM rep (Thomas Kunz) and my and other responses.
They are not budging on this issue and if you purchased your eye-one photo package
prior to 12/04 you don't get access to any of the new goodies. They will let you purchase
a scanner and beamer upgrades but you cannot even purchase the editor or camera
modules unless you buy a whole new package.

Uhh! So the check is in the spectrophotometer itself? Seems a bit nasty.
So if you upgrade they have to send you a whole new spectro? I guess I can
understand them charging for the upgrade but it does seem a little
expensive.

The "new" or "enhanced" eye-one photo package has the exact same spectrophotometer
as the old one. Only the firmware is changed on the new model and although GM could
easily send you a firmware patch that would allow you to get access to the new features
they will not do so - not even for an upgrade fee. You have to buy the whole new package
including spectrophotometer (which you already have) to get the new features.

in my opinion, that's a really bad policy. is there any chance of getting gm to offer some
sort of upgrade path? by the way, i couldn't connect to the discussion link on the rob
galbraith site.

I don't understand this. For profiling a camera, or editing an existing
profile, you wouldn't normally even plug in the spectro.

The spectrophotometer also serves as a "dongle" and you cannot access any features in
the Match software without having the spectrophotometer attached. Additionally, your
firmware must be enabled (licensed) to access specific features, such as camera, scanner,
or profile editor.

Well I just got a nasty one of my own. I bought the Eye One after Dec 14 on
on the basis of the new modules, ie it would be able to profile my camera
etc. The Digital Camera module can only work with the Colorchecker SG.
This was not included with the Eye One package and so I asked Gretag where
it was. Here was their response:

" Please be informed that the Color Checker SG is not included in the
EyeOne package.

The price and part-no are as follows:

50106 ColorChecker SG EUR 325.00

For any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us."

Not that it's a lot of consolation, but Gretag Colorchecker SG costs
$285 at Chromix.com in the US. Still isn't cheap.

Yesterday I received a note from Gretag that they would send me a
Colorchecker at no charge. So at least my situation was resolved
satisfactorily. I also mentioned the lack of notice re the upgrade and sure
enough later in the day an email was distributed. So I guess they are being
responsive but perhaps not to all people. Keep persisting.
