New Release of QuadToneRIP for both Mac and PC

New Release of QuadToneRIP for both Mac and PC

2005-06-01 by Roy Harrington

There's a new release -- 2.2c for Mac and 2.2f for PC.

There are a bunch of small fixes:

R300 -- blurry image and extraneous output fixed.

R200/R300/R320 more profiles for MediaStreet QuadBlack inks.

R800/R1800
Preliminary support. Only profiles for Enhanced Matte.
Since this is basically a one black ink printer, the output is sort of black-only
from a quality output but it does nave very small dots 1.5 pl. You must use
the 1440x1440 resolution to get this smallest dot.
Creation of profiles on Windows is not supported yet. Mac users can make
profiles but read the ReadMe in the R800-UC folder.

Tiger bug of Dual print dialogs has been worked around so there is
only one dialog page.

Hi Roy

What are your thoughts re 4800 support? ;-) Just wondering whether it would
be a biggie given it's so close to the 4000. My 4800 arrives tomorrow....

Hi Steve,

I suspect the R2400 and the x800 printers will be fairly easy to support. Main
thing is to add one ink for the LLK and do some calibration tests.
I'm checking Epson regularly to get the spec sheets for them.

Re: New Release of QuadToneRIP for both Mac and PC

Hey!

Probably about to publicly show my great ignorance of things
digital/computerish again.

I downloaded and installed the new QTR which supports the R1800. When I
tried to print, I first got a little Quad Tone Rip Front End message box
with a message saying "I/O error 32" I tried a few more times and
sometimes I get a totally different looking error box that says
something like "unable to find driver named escp2-r1800"

What does all this mean? Is it that it is looking for the actual Epson
US version R1800 driver (in which case mine is probably named different,
as I live in Japan and use the Japanese model, PX-G5000). I tried
downloading and using the US driver, but it won't recognise the device
(unlike the 2200 driver and the Japanese PM 400PX printer).

Just now I did a file search, with the US driver installed, and
could find nothing on the computer with that name, so I'm guessing this
problem has nothing to do with the Epson drivers right?

What oh what should I do?

I was so full of joyish expectation too.

Sooner,
Dean

Roy,

Is there a list of all supported printers? Someone here recently
mentioned the 2000p is supported, and that's the first I heard.

Hi Dean,

I'll have to check on it. In the mean time I'd bet you could use the
R800 driver with the caveat that it will limit to 8.5 inches wide.

Hey!

Thanks for the fast reply.

Thanks for the information. However, I'm still a bit confused how the
whole thing works. Can you (or someone else) tell me what driver exactly
gets used. Does this QTR process do the whole thing itself, or does it
work through the Epson driver? When you say the R800 driver, does that
me an Epson one, or is this what I am selecting with the pop down menus
in the QTR front end?

Oh, I suppose I should have mentioned I'm on a PC too, using the home
version of XP.

Sorry to be such a pain.

Sooner,
Dean

QTR prints through the standard installed printer driver. When you select the
printer from the dropdown list it uses Windows printing (in RAW mode) to print.
The error you got (I/O Error 32) is a printer not ready error. Don't know what
is going on with the driver not found. Can you print from other applications?

Hi Stephen,

I also got I/O Error 32 initially, but now I got

ERROR: Fatal error: Unable to find driver named "escp2-R1800"!

I have no problem printing through Photoshop on Windows XP.

Thanks,

Hi Stephen, Roy,

Out of curiosity I selected R800 as the printing model and I got a
print from my R1800.

[Digital BW] Re: New Release of QuadToneRIP for both Mac and PC

2005-06-03 by Roy Harrington

Hi Nick,

That's what I had in mind.
There's drivers at multiple levels so that's the cause of confusion.
As Stephen mentioned the standard epson driver is used at the lowest level
as a raw driver. This is essentially just the usb interface and the spooler.
At the QTR level the "Printing Model" selects which QTR driver. This is the part that
does all the actual work of figuring out what to send to the printer. The error
about missing "escp2-R1800" is from QTR and it looks like I missed a table entry
for this. The R800 and R1800 are very similar except for the paper width
so I thought using the QTR driver for the R800 (i.e. picking that printing model)
might work OK. Thanks for confirming that it does.

I ought to have a fix for this real soon.

Roy

Hey!

Thanks Stephen & Roy for your replies.

Roy wrote:

I am now getting this to work on my PX-G5000 (aka R1800). Cool.

However, when printing as suggested with the 1440 x 1440 setting, I get
very prominent banding, especially evident in the semi dark areas (how's
that for a technical term?). When I try at the max setting, I don't get
this, but I do get lots and lots of ink dumped on the paper (although I
guess I can limit this with the ink limit control). I don't get any
banding at all when printing through QImage etc (and I aligned the head
just the other day too).

Is this banding at 1440 x 1440 normal, or is something else afoot?

Hope I don't sound like a whinger. Already the results look much better,
so I'm actually very happy.

Thanks again.

Dean

The only suggestion I can make is that you un-install/re-install your printer
drivers. This error is coming from Windows when QTR attempts to open the
printer.
