Hi Folks, Over the past few days I have been thinking about purchasing an Epson 3000 printer. I currently own an 1160 printer. If I purchase the Cone Piezography driver for the 3000 will it work on the 1160 as well? Thanks, Don Bryant

For Quadtone printing (Cone inks or MIS FS) I recommend the Cone driver. So far I did no Hexatone printing with Cone inks and driver . I don´t miss it, because MIS Variable MIX Hexatone printing at 2880 dpi is as dotless and smooth as Quadtone-Piezo, so in this case the Cone driver is no must. B.

Don, the latest Piezo cd has drivers for all the desktop units. Is there however a price to be paid in terms of time to print? PiezoBW driver (at 2160?) vs. Epson1280/90 at 2880? I think I've seen it said that the Cone driver is appreciably faster? Perhaps that was in the quadtone case, I'm curious about it too. Sam McCandless <samcc@vom.com>

The Cone driver on the 1160 is much quicker than the Epson driver on the 1290 with 2880 dpi (which are not absolutely necessary, 1440 are enough). If you know the speed of the updated Cone driver for the 3000 - you have an impression.......it is raaaaaather sloooooo.....w. Bernd

Dear List Humans, The Cone Piezo driver does not support "all the desktop units" as indicated in the post below. Check the Cone website very carefully for the exact list. One noteable exception, the Epson 1270. The newest version of the Cone Piezo driver supports the older 1200 and the newer 1280, but not the 1270. The newest version does support both the mentioned 1160 and 3000. Enjoy! The new driver supports all the desktiop units that Cone supports. The previous driver was printer specific. I'm sorry to be so slow in responding to Bernd's post, but the Christmas Crazies have overtaken me. Bernd was kind enough to write: >I've got the feeling that you know much more than you show. My not-so-proud boast is that I know about as much as you can from just lurking on the safe side of the bleeding edge. One thing I don't know is for which printers there's any advantage to PiezoBW, versus MIS VM or FS, if IJM has not profiled the paper you want to use. In that case I have the impression that MIS is about as easy to use as PiezoBW on a printer for which Paul has done the curves. In the case of the 1160, however, my remembrance is that, even at 2160 dpi (PiezoBW) vs 1440 (Epson), the PiezoBW driver was said on this list to be quite a bit faster than Epson's driver. Is that true? If it is, then maybe the PiezoBW driver is worth the extra money to someone who isn't intolerant of the relatively warm prints. In the case of the 1280, the consensus seems to be that the Epson driver's 2880-dpi print option prints as well as the PiezoBW driver. And I guess the 1280's Epson driver at 2880 is also slower than the PiezoBW driver? But I'm not clear on whether 2880 is overkill? Is the 1280's Epson driver inferior at 1440 to the PiezoBW driver? If not, is it slower even at 1440? If it is, then again, maybe the PiezoBW driver is worth the extra money to someone who isn't intolerant of the relatively warm prints. I hope those of you who know about this will indulge me. I'm most concerned about the quality of the print and its longevity. But I could live with only warm prints. And I have several hundred old family photos to reprint. So I think I would pay IJM $300 for the PiezoBW driver(s) if that would let me print them appreciably faster. Thanks. Sam

Sam, You wrote: (big snip) >... >...I have several hundred old family photos to reprint. ... Have you seen the sample of the sepia-neutral inkset? Go to the Files section of the forum. It's at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint/files/ Then click on the "Message Related Files" link and see the image, "VM-Sepia3-N3.jpg." This shows the range that the new variable-tone inkset will cover. I re-print old photos and do landscapes. For the home I prefer neutral landscapes. But, for the old photos, I think this sepia tone looks great. Now I can really match the look of the old photos. (I note also that the neutral test strips I've had in the fader from this inkset show the least fade of any third-party ink I've tested. They are in the 2000P range. Also, because there is no toner in the neutral test strip, the 5% patch on my 1160 test strip is actually smoother than the Piezo test strip 5% [Piezo won on 10% though] -- the point is, it's very smooth.) Sam- I haven't literally timed the printing, but I have an 1160 with piezo and one with lyson ink and epson driver... the piezo driver prints at least twice as fast. Warm is not an issue if you switch to FS inks. I'm getting pretty neutral prints using piezo software, FS ink and Cone Wells River paper. hope this helps.
