Paper weight/thickness with C86

Paper weight/thickness with C86

2005-06-09 by jim_natale

New member here, although I have been reading...and learning.

Have the Epson C86 with Paul Roark's EZ inkset from MIS (matte,
neutral). I've very pleased with the results. (Well, more than
very pleased--experiencing again the satisfaction I had in the 70s
first learning to process and print b&w in the darkroom.) Also
having success with, and enjoying, Clayton Jones's black-ink-only
technique. Thanks to both of them for their work--and to all here
who are keeping up a fascinating flow of information. Printers,
paper, ink, discussions of Weston's aesthetics and techniques,
whatever, I'm checking back often and just drinking it all in.

I'm eager now to try various papers beyond EEM. My question is
simple. Epson says the paper handling capabilities of the C86
are "64 g/m2 to 90 g/m2. Up to 250 g/m2 with Genuine EPSON paper."
Does that match up with the experiences of group members who have
experimented using this printer with different papers? Can I assume
that any brand name matte paper up to 250 g/m2 will work without a
problem? Is that the upper limit? What about weights in the low
300s? Also, how should I factor in the specs on paper thickness?

Well, obviously, this turned into more than one question...

If you're looking to try different papers, consider those I've noted in the
C86 Readme file at http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/C86-EZ-UT-Readme.htm.

One thing I've found is that if a paper -- often one of the heavier ones --
has corners that turn up, the head might hit them. You can often help this
by straightening the paper before it is fed into the printer.

Sometimes a little push on the paper helps with the heavier ones. Although
I have not tried it with the C86, another old trick is to have a heavy
cardboard or foam core behind the paper you want to feed.

Papers in the low 300s can work.
