GRey Balancer

2005-04-19 by Graham

Hi there,

I came across this site:

http://www.photographical.net/black_and_white.html

which says that in exchange for signing up tp the news letter you can
download the Photographical.net Grey Balancer. This is set up to use
Picture Windows Pro. image editing software, which is what I use.
However the download link seems to be dead.

Does anyone know anything about this software or how to get hold of it?

The gray balancer was a program Epson included in the packages for
2100s in Europe. Fortunately we were never subjected to this abuse in
the USA but a few of us went to great lengths to find Euro copies so we
could use them on a 2200.

The general consensus was (very understated IMO) that the best gray
balancer did was run up your bill for epson ink and paper...never
producing a neutral BW print!!!

cheers,

Tom O'Connell

Well, actually I had a different experience with Gray Balancer than
Tom and most others. Tom is correct, that the general consensus was
it wasn't worth the trouble. I may have just been lucky, but after
MANY hours of tweaking the Gray balancer for my particular 2200
machine, I got the best B&W on certain cotton papers that I've ever
been able to achieve. I've not been able to get as good tonality and
DMax with my 4000 (which replaced the 2200), although I'm getting some
pretty good results with the Quadtone RIP. My prints with the 2200
and the Gray Balancer not only looked great, but they were essentially
metamerism free. I was using Eboni black ink in the 2200 with the
Gray Balancer settings.

I suppose I could hack the gray balancer to work with the 4000, but
I've decided it was too much time and pain to do again. If Roy
Harrington hadn't come up with the Quadtone RIP, I'd be tempted though.

Tony

This is VERY misleading to new folks and those that don't know better.

The Epson 4000 did NOT replace the 2200 as a printer. Only in some people's
workflow.

Epson still shows and sells both.

I don't find it VERY misleading, I read exactly what he meant, that a
4000 has replaced his 2200.

Oops, as "koloshor" said, I meant that the 4000 replaced the 2200 that
I had been using. Didn't mean to be unclear about that Seth.

Several months ago I received samples of the latest "wonder coating" under
several different names. This was one of them. They failed to produce what
I consider a good image with either PK or MK.

Thanks Paul. I'm sorry to hear that.
