Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin 308

Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin 308

2005-06-08 by Carl Schofield

I just tried some of this new Hahnemuhle paper and was very
impressed. The unprinted Satin has the look and feel of regular
photo rag, but after printing the printed area develops a slight
luster sheen. I was printing from a 4000 using QTR and MIS UC inks.
The print looks similar to an air dried silver print, with slightly
less gloss but a more luminous appearance. Very nice and rather
unique surface. This will be my standard for awhile - no need for k3
inks with this paper. No bronzing, no gloss differential, no
annoying surface reflections, and no "tacky" RC plastic paper feel.
The best paper yet for my tastes and needs.

I don't know yet Steve. I used a profile that I made earlier for
Hahnemuhle White Velvet. Blacks look deep and quite good but
probably not in the same league as PK on photo paper. I'll let you
know more after I've profiled the paper.

Cool. I see it is very new. I can't find it on any UK website. Keep us
posted on the results.

I am very interested in using this paper but I am hoping that it doesn’t
have as much surface texture. How does the texture compare to regular
photorag?

Texture looks about the same as regular photo rag.

Hi Carl;

Sounds very interesting! what does the sheen look like in the highlight
areas? Are you filling them in with glop? Also: may we know which
dealer has it? Thanks

I have some on order from LexJet and should have it on Monday. My understanding is that
it takes Matte Black not Photo.

Re: [Digital BW] Re: Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin 308

Steve,

I haven't used any glop but gloss differential is not obvious as it
would be with an RC print. The sheen appears uniform in the
landscape prints I've made so far. If you had large areas without
ink then you might notice some GD. I purchased the HPR Satin from
Lexjet. One other thing I've noticed is some ink rub off in black
areas (using MK). I tried using PK, but dmax is too low. So far the
best I've been able to get in the dmax department is a 1.72 using MK.

BTW - Satin products from HM have + 2 g/m2 higher weight - it looks
as they add one more layer to their normal 4 layers coating.

Thare are another HM Satin products - White Etching Satin (natural
feel, not as bright as PhotoRag Satin) and canvas Satin.
