UT7/Glossy paper problem

UT7/Glossy paper problem

2005-06-16 by Scott Holt

I recently started using the MIS UT7 ink set on my 2200 printer and
have been very happy (ok, floored) with the results I'm getting on
Epson Enhanced Matte.

I'm trying to find a good glossy paper to use with these inks and
started with Ilford Galerie Smooth (both Pearl and Glossy). The
results so far are disappointing. I am seeing a pattern on my prints,
bands of smudged ink down the page. I've also seen this with Epson
Premium Glossy, but the effect is not as severe (still enough to ruin
the print, though).

The bands appear to be caused by something in the paper feed
mechanism: the are spaced the same as the rollers that the paper
feeds through when exiting the printer. The rollers appear to be
clean. I can feed clean paper through and it comes out clean.

One thing I did find odd was that the print was tacky when it came
out of the printer. Could it be that as the print exits the printer,
the surface is sufficiently damp that the rollers damage the print
surface?

Has anyone else seen this problem when printing on Ilford or other
papers? If so, how were you able to solve it?

Perhaps this will help.
