Lascaux Fixative - How to use?

Lascaux Fixative - How to use?

2005-06-17 by Scott McLoughlin

I bought a few cans of this to try on matte prints.

Oddly, there's no instructions on the can (just not to breath the stuff
or set it
on fire). I also Googled looking for some instructions, and found nothing
specific (just to use it outdoors and that it's seems popular with
pastel artists).

So how should I apply this? Multiple coats? How long should it take to
dry? Any gotchas to worry about?

If I missed the key URL that has all this info, I apologize in advance.

Thanks!

Scott

I just used it two minutes ago. It is a no brainer. This is a solvent acrylic spray.
Just shake the can well, hold it about 8-10" from the surface and give one
good coat by moving the spray in a wave pattern rather than a straight line
and overlapping areas sprayed. Then I wait 5 minutes, rotate the print 90
degrees, and repeat. For the most water resistant protection you might want to
actually give three coats. I wear a charcoal filtered mask and goggles.
Solvents are nasty to the body. This spray offers good protection against
everything except uv radiation.

RE: [Digital BW] Lascaux Fixative - How to use?

2005-06-17 by Paul Roark

I use 3 or 4 light coats. It dries to the touch almost immediately. But
it'll smell bad for a day. So I let it hang to dry overnight.

Since it is so invisible on matte paper, it's rather forgiving. I hang my
print with a weight on the bottom. I do horizontal, vertical, and diagonal
spray paths, always starting the spray not aimed at the print in case there
is a semi-dry glop at first. I think I'm about 12" away from the print and
move at about a rate of 12" per second. After each spray I use a hair drier
on the print, go out and catch a breath of fresh air, and then apply the
next coat. I only clear the nozzle (spray upside down) when I'm totally
done with the print -- only a single spraying session per print. I do wear
goggles.

Hope this helps.

John and Paul,

Thanks! That's just what I need to know. I'll give it a whirl later
today.

Any thoughts on double spraying, ie. initially with a UV spray and then the Lascaux?

RE: [Digital BW] Lascaux Fixative - How to use?

2005-06-17 by Paul Roark

I think there may be potential in having different materials and dual or
multi-coating of papers. However, on the matte papers you're liable to
start to lose dmax after 3 light Lascaux sprays.

The Lascaux is a thinner mix that soaks in more. So, I'd think that might
go on first. Then the heavier UV that lays on top. A Lascaux-like spray
that had a UV filter in it might be useful if we could find one.

This multi-spraying might be particularly effective when the top coats are
the Eco Print Shield or other water-borne coating. I found, for example,
when I was experimenting with Hydrocote that if the print was sprayed first
with Lascaux I got less if any separation at the edge when I trimmed the
print.

Livick's very high lightfastness used a dual coating method very similar to
this.

The Golden tech told me that the solvent based UV coatings are more
effective than water-borne. On the other hand, the Eco Print Shield appears
to be more effective in fade testing. I'd guess it is the thickness, not
the effectiveness per mil. This might indicate that a UV solvent based coat
under the Eco water-borne would be even more effective.

Anyway, dual or multi-layered coats might have potential.

I think there may be potential in having different materials and dual or
multi-coating of papers.

Paul,

Do you think there is any reason not to mix 2 coats of Lascaux with 1 coats of
Premier Art for UV protection.

I have this job now that is done with monochrome pigments and I often use
Lascaux with these prints so as to not reduce blacks. However this prints will
be displayed in a public context without glass and without framing or
lamination. I don't want daylight damagingit. I am going to spray it. My
thoughts were to start with Lascaux and end with Premier Art.

True, if you apply it too frequently, you may end up with "no brain"
at all, the fumes have a rather agressive, chemical smell. I usually
apply it on my roof deck, and even if I close the door instantly the
smell will penetrate into my room through the tiny chinks...

Best would be to have a printer who applies this kind of stuff in
purely liquid form, like the GLOP.

That's why if you have half a brain you will buy a $20.00 charcoal filetered
mask and goggles. Yea, they should try to incorporate the uv filter into the
inkset. Good idea, market it.

The "chemical smell" isn't the actual danger and a $20 charcoal filter
is delusional if you're doing a lot of this. Smart to work outside if
the indoor space isn't pressurized (fan pulling from outside) and
intentionally ventillated (open window, duct etc).

I do do it outside and with a charcoal filtered mask and goggles. If you
change the filters often and you do not smell even a trace of the solvent, then
no it is not delusional to use this method. However, if you are doing this stuff
day in and day out with large volumes, you should either construct a special
spray room with exhauset fans air imput, etc. At that point I would farm the
work out to a company that specializes in such work.

Good. Better safe than sorry.

Smell is a sense in our heads, same as taste, it's not a measure of
chemical safety...it can briefly be a warning, but not much more.

The delusion is to imagine that if we don't smell it, danger's gone.
