ideas on high-end scanner replacement

2005-06-20 by B Richfurd

Hello,
We are looking to replace our aging and troublesome Linotype-Hell Topaz 2 scanner. What
are the choices for high-end scanners today. Our Topaz if finally hitting its end and we
also want to migrate to Mac OSX and updating our software for that Mac. We are running
the Topaz on OS 9.2 and Linocolor 6.0.1 and can only use PS 7. What does anyone
recommend. We need the scanner to continue scanning 5000+ 4x5 and 8x10
transparencies and some BW negs.
Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill-

You might want to ask your question on the Hi-End Scanning list-
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ScanHi-End/

You will get lots of opinionated responses ;^)

IMO, for that volume of work, you should look into a refurbished Howtek 4500
or 8000 from Aztek, Inc, along with their Digital PhotoLab software.

Feel free to contact me off-list if you want to discuss this further.

We are looking for a flat-bed due to the fact that we so some reflective scanning and even
less book scanning. We also do some object scanning that is far easier than with a camera.
So it will be a flat-bed that can go hi res across the whole bed. The Topaz we are looking
to replace has a 8000 dpi (optical 5080 dpi) sweet spot down the center but is only about
an inch or so wide.
Thanks for they help,
Bill

Yeah, I know what you mean. Sure seemed to work in my college years
though. "Seemed" being the operative word there...

try the same post here-

I think you will get a lot of valuable input.
