Improving UltraChrome density

Hello,
I use QTR on a 2100 with UltraChromes. I also use an HP7660.

I have often used the HP for portraits because of the better density, but generally prefer the 2100 because of the neutral BW I can achieve.

I remain unhappy, however, with the UC/QTR black density and wondered if there is a way to improve this. Do I just have to accept this as a characteristic of this generation of UltraChromes?

Richard,

paper is a big factor in dmax. You may get more accurate feedback here
if you mentioned what densities you achieve at 100% and on what papers.
Also, dmax varies depending on how the profile is made.
And you may compare different drivers to see which works best for your papers -
such as the Epson driver, IJC/OPM, Imageprint etc.

Richard,

Are you using matte or glossy paper?  The best glossy papers with Photo K
should be closer to the dye dmax.  Spraying the prints will get rid of the
bronzing.

If you're using matte paper, EAM or PhotoRag will probably have the best
dmax.  

In addition to getting the ink limit fine tuned with your rip, what I did on
my 2200 to get the best dmax with UC MK was to put some UC Cyan into the
100% black patch.  (I did this when I had the older version of IJC, which
could not pump as much MK as the newer one or QTR, so I'm not 100% sure what
the results would be with QTR.  But I don't think I was being limited by the
rip at on the 2200.)  At any rate, to find the best mix, I believe I backed
the ink limit off one notch from where it was optimized with MK and ran a
45% curve of the cyan with the K a horizontal line, full on (but with the
limit down one notch.  The test strip then showed what amount of Cyan to put
into the mix.   Some playing around with the ratios will be needed.  The
bottom line, however, was that UC MK with a little C seemed to give a better
dmax than MK by itself, and I suspect it might be the same with your setup.
