R800 dead again

R800 dead again

2005-07-06 by Stephen Kobrin

My second R800 died yesterday after just a few months. (The first had
serious paper feed problems and Epson replaced it after some
discussion.) It started feeding sheet after sheet and I could not turn
it off. After I unplugged it, it would not turn on. While I suspect
few people are thinking of an R800 at this point, at least in my
experience, it has not been a reliable printer. It is a shame as it
does a beautiful job with color prints, especially on glossy paper.
(It is still under warranty and I am about to take it in to the local
Epson subcontractor.)

Steve,

I bought an R800 when they first hit the market. I've never had any
problems with it and I have literaly printed thousands of photos with
it, fwiw.

HiSteve,

I've had that problem occasionally with certain papers on my R800.
Some papers (usually cotton) seem to slip under the roller when
feeding and then the printer just starts feeding one after the other.
Very frustrating. I found though that if I clean the "feed roller"
or whatever it is called with some alcohol, etc., that I can usually
get rid of the problem, at least for awhile. Interesting that when it
acts up, it will do fine with luster surface paper, etc. I suspect
that the feed mechanism is just much more reliable with the coated
glossy/luster surfaces. I agree it is a real problem and Epson should
own up to it.
