Imageprint RIP/2200/2400

Imageprint RIP/2200/2400

2005-07-02 by bradley_w01

I'm pretty new to digital b/w printing and have been experimenting
with 1280 and BO, but
am feeling like it's time to invest and branch out. That said, I
don't really have much patience
for tinkering.

So, the price of a used 2200 + Imageprint is pretty close to that for
a new 2400. Given my
lack of patience, I'm wondering if the RIP is a better option for me.
 2400 samples are easy to
come by, but not so much prints from the 2200+RIP.

I guess I'm soliciting opinions on output from the latter combo and
also the plusses and
minuses of each option. Thx - brad

Imageprint is probably the best and easiest way to get
neutral B+W prints for a wide variety of papers. It is
expensive, and QTR is a much less expensive approach
but imageprint is remarkable in its ease of use and
overall image quality. BO is another option you have
if you get the 2200 and is not supported for the 2400.

I would love to see a high resolution scan of a "neutral" step wedge from IP
and a 21/2200. What colours are used?

Thanks. I am interested following the scans of Epson Adv B&W that I have
seen posted here and those I have made myself. It would be cool if it could
be posted for all to see on the web.

RE: [Digital BW] Imageprint RIP/2200/2400

2005-07-02 by Ken Carney

I use the 2200 and IP6. Given a high quality solution, time is more
important to me than cost (within reason). IP is a no-brainer, you just
install the software, select a paper profile and print. You are probably
aware that unlike your 1280 dye printer, the 2200 won't make a good print on
gloss or semi-gloss paper because the pigmented ink stands on the surface of
the paper. I have no first-hand experience with the 2400, but if gloss
prints are important you might check out its capability for that and factor
into the equation.

Re: [Digital BW] Imageprint RIP/2200/2400

Steve

One more thing. I printed both the imageprint file of
Roy's 21 step wedge using both QTR and imageprint. I
used epson semigloss because QTR already has curves
for it. I used the warm and cool curves and set the
blend to 50%. I believe this should result in the most
neutral situation for QTR but if I am wrong, please
let me know. I am just beginning to use QTR so I am a
long way from expert.

As an aside, the measured dmax for the QTR print was
2.12 and for the imageprint was 2.26!

Regards
Woody

Re: [Digital BW] Imageprint RIP/2200/2400

I only have a 2200. I haven't decided if, without BO
printing, the 2400 is a real advantage for me,
particularly since I have both Imageprint and QTR for
black and white printing.

Re: [Digital BW] Imageprint RIP/2200/2400

2005-07-03 by edrudolpho

Hi Gary, I don't believe QTR supports the 2400 yet. There is another Yahoo group devoted
to QTR and a recent post there also asked when QTR might be available for the 2400.

I would also suspect that you did not write the curves for QTR. Given QTR
provides complete control over ink limits I would not expect Imageprint to
be able to beat it on dMax with the same inks. But nonetheless I am more
interested in the coloured inks laid down. Thanks.

Not yet but Colorbyte says on their site that it
expects to have imageprint ready when the new printers
are shipping in volume (probably means early fall!).

Re: [Digital BW] Imageprint RIP/2200/2400

2005-07-03 by Elwood Spedden

You are correct that I did not write the curves for
QTR (Now that I have my 810 densitometer reapired I
can begin though!). I used Roys provided curves for
the epson premium semi gloss and assumed he had done a
really good job. I didn't mean to imply that in
general one could expect the imageprint files to have
better DMax, only that in this specific case it did.

My personal opinion is that given the price difference
between the two, and the flexibility to control the
curves in QTR the issue will come down to how much
time you want to spend developing custom curves for
all the various papers. Imageprint does this and their
latest updates added profiles for at least 40 new or
revised papers.

If you want to spend the maximum time making images
i.e. behind the camera, Imagprint is a great solution.
If you enjoy the fun of creating better print
technology the have at it with QTR. Personally I am
doing both. But then I am retired!

Note that on that the review of the 4800, on the luminous landscape, the reviewer states
that in his opinon

"And what about Epson 2400 owners? Though I haven't tested one, and am not likely to at
this point, it would seem to be a great choice. It doesn't suffer from the same degree of
ink swapping problems that the larger Pro models do, and offers great value for the
money. Probably the best photographic printer currently available. Epson 2200 owners
though might want to think twice about the necessity of upgrading. Improvements are
there, but not really compelling, especially if the Imageprint RIP is considered."

As for me I am considering a refurnbished 2200 and the Bowhaus RIP vs getting a 2400.
The pros that I see for this choice are; 1) refillable carts, 2) MIS inks for the Bowhaus RIP,
3) profiles available from Bowhaus, and 4) cheaper to print with the refillable carts and the
MIS inks.

My only question is: are B&W prints from the 2400 better than a 2200 w/Bowhaus RIP (or
Image Print). I only print in B&W as a hobbist.

all

I am about to try MIS UT7 for the third time in my
life (never successful getting rid of air and foam the
first two times)

I received the inks and they are now in clear carts,
different from before. They have a foil seal on the
top which I assume covers a vent hole and need to be
removed.

MIS used to recommend three cleaning cycles before
running a nozzle check. Still valid?

Any advice on getting this system up and running would
be gratefully appreciated. I'm sure that Paul Roark
knows all the tricks but I bet quite a few more of you
do as well.

thanks

Yes, remove the tape that covers the air intake.

No, don't run cleaning cycles unless you need to. Then don't run more than
3 in a row.

With any kink of luck, you'll get a good nozzle check as soon as the printer
runs its usual cycle upon changing inks.

Set it up and got running perfectly right away. I just
finished printing several EEM images using the neutral
curves you supply. Really nice.

Paul

I have continued throughout the day to work on various
images using the UT7 and your curves. I am amazed and
looking forward to getting away from the
technicalities and toward creating images of value.
(at least for me)

Now one last question if I may. I am sure that you do
not continue to buy prefilled cartridges from MIS at
$86 the set. I assume that there are refillable carts
for the 2200 that allow the use of the bulk inks to
cut the costs to something (much) more reasonable.
I'll bet this has all been covered before on this
forum, but as a newcomer I don't have the benefit of
all that has gone before.

So if you could guide me as to what is the approach to
bulk inks and fillable cartridges for the 2200, I
would be in your debt.

May we all have a colorful (B+W) life!

Yes, I recommend bulk ink and re-filling.

See http://www.inksupply.com/c82refill.cfm.

The syringes, needles, etc. you need are more clearly outlined at
http://www.inksupply.com/spongless_carts.cfm, which is focused, however, on
the 1280.

I recommend some extras of chips, carts, syringes and needles.

Expect ink in the sink and on the hands (or wear gloves). Plastic laundry
sinks will stain so bad you'll never get them clean.

Good luck.

I have scanned the appropriate 21 step wedges so that
the comparison you wished to see can be made.

I am new to the forum so I am not sure how to proceed.
I don't have my personal website up yet and I am not
sure if I will screw up the forum by attaching a 1mb
file? How do you suggest we proceed?
