AA filters on monochrome

AA filters on monochrome

2005-07-14 by claudej1@aol.com

Interestingly enough, between the slight sub-micron alignment tolerances,
the non-apochromatic rendering of zoom lenses, and the fact that zoom lenses
very seldom hit the sympathetic frequencies of a 6 micron well site pitch is
what made the prism Foeveon moire free 99.9% of the time in the real world (6
microns deman about 83 LPMM performance from a lens)

I see your point about luminance moire, which cannot be removed after the
fact unless you have some pretty fancy pattern recognition software. So I
suppose a AA filter micht be the ticket, but it would be MUCH milder (less
sharpness destructive) on a mono sensor than a color one. Correct?

took the plunge with 2400.....

2005-07-14 by Douglas meeuwsen

Well I am looking at my new $850 2400. Looks pretty nice. I have the
three profiles that come from epson, and now I would like to find out
if there is any ilford smooth profiles out there (for kirkland
basically) or any other profiles at all. Anyone know? Have not yet
printed my first print. Pretty cool. Thanks for any info, DM

2400 very cool machine

2005-07-14 by Douglas meeuwsen

Well, I just did some test prints, (all on the sheets of premium glossy
that came with the machine), and every single one of them was what I
would call excellent. I tried all the diferent color management systems
like icc profiles, colorsync, sliders, and advanced BW. Every single
print was great. The color matched my powerbook screen exactly on all
the systems. I could tell no diference really. The epson icc profile
looked exactly like the sliders a center with the "vivid" setting. The
others were the same colors except just a little less saturation. Just
barely diferent. The advance BW mode really works. Kind of spooky to
get perfect neutral, cool, or warm, or sepia tones without wasteing 5
or six sheets. The cool setting is very subtle. If you put it next to
the neutral print, you might say the neutral one is "warm". The "warm
setting is more obvious, but very nice. The sepia is nice too, and I
generally dont like sepia too much.
Like i said, so far i have only tried Premium glossy, which usually is
too glossy for me, but these look pretty nice. There is no bronzing at
all, but there is a teensy bit of gloss diferential in the highlights.
The highlights are a bit more dull. That is weird compared to MIS
UT2/glop, where the highlights are are more glossy. The "highlight
shift" button does not seem to do anything so far, with my test print.

now I just need to get some profiles for my other papers from somewhere

I hope this printer doesn't take all the fun out of printing!

I'd like to see how it performs with Enhanced Matt or Velvet F/A paper
in B&W. I'm sitting on the fence with a 2200.

Re: [Digital BW] Re: 2400 very cool machine

2005-07-14 by Douglas meeuwsen

I have some VFA and enhanced matter right here. I found the profiles
for both. Right now, I have the photo black cart in. From what I have
heard, the biggest diference between the 2200 and 2400 is in the glossy
output, where it really puts the 2200 to shame. I think Iwill try a
matte print with the PK cart just to see what happens. There is a
profile for that combo...DM

Re: [Digital BW] Re: 2400 very cool machine

well, just like I thought, the contrast is low on matte paper with the
photo-Black cart. I tried it cuz there is a profile for enhanced matte
with the photo cart. Simple contrast adjustments dont help it either.
The shadows Block up when you increase the contrast. Interestingly, the
specific profile for EEM and PK was not as good as simply using the
sliders. The sliders were much more neutral. Also, when using EEM with
the PK cart, the advanced B/W mode is disabled......I have the day
off....fun, DM

If you feel like playing with QTR on your 2400, I put some profiles
(QTR/ icc) for Ilford Smooth Pearl on my filesharing site in the
Quad2400 archive. There is also an icc profile for the default,
Epson driver Advanced BW mode on Ilford Smooth Pearl. The latter
opens up the shadows quite a bit on my printer. All of above are for
printing at highest resolution settings in both QTR and the Epson
driver.

Carl.....I'M DUMB....I cant seem to get the icc profile to show up in
my list. I have put it in every profile folder I can think of. I have
done this before when I used to use QTR. I dont use QTR anymore, but I
dont remember it being required to use an installer program to place
the .icc files. Where should I put the 2400-ISP-ADVBW file in OSX?
Thanks again..DM

Sorry, my error. That profile was re-named after saving and does not
work. Download again and use the correct profile titled ISP-2400N.icc

well, I still dont see it. I assume it should up as a print space,
correct? I put it in the colorsync profiles folder (two of them, one
under user, and the other under Mac HD) then I close and re-open CS.
assuming that I can get it to show up, which media do i choose in the
driver?...thanks, and please forgive my lack of brainpower. (I am a

Re: [Digital BW] Re: 2400 very cool machine

2005-07-14 by Carl Schofield

It will show up in your printer profile list as "QTR-Gray
ISP-2400N". Use perceptual rendering intent and in print settings
Photo RPM, high speed unchecked, premium luster media type, advanced
black and white mode.

Try restarting the computer.

I got the profile to work, it will take some time to see if it is
better than selecting EPSG and "same as source" as the
printspace....... thank you carl. To my eye, both look just fabulous on
the images i have been printing, which are of musicians dressed in
black. Both have great shadow detail. Also, I have actually been
printing on kirkland, which most peoples experience responds
identically to ilford smooth. I do have some ilford smooth sitting
here, somewhere, and when I find it I will investigate further. Thanks
yet again, DM

It may not be spelled as you expect.
Look for QTR - Gray ISP-2400N

Yes. In my reply I wrote:

which means basically the same thing you said above. In strict terms, a
monochrome antialiasing filter would be equally sharpness destructive at
any frequency higher than its cutoff, but its cutoff could be much
higher to begin with (sharper in the vernacular) than the antialiasing
filter on a Bayer sensor.
