No more Agfa Scala?

No more Agfa Scala?

2005-07-16 by lovelipp

I read that Agfa Scala B&W slide film is being discontinued. I still
have to have slides of my B&W photographs - which are now on the warm
side, tho not quite sepia. What film has anyone liked, (that doesn't
have an off-color cast)? I can shoot in daylight or at night with 3200K
bulbs.
            Thanks,
                 Arlene

Shoot regular b&w film and reverse process it in a reversal b&w
chemistry.

Arlene, check out www.dr5.com -- they can reverse-process any b+w
negative film into
transparencies.

I have also read rumours that Scala is being phased out. I don't
know how true they are. In any case, the processing is getting
rarer. Readers in Canada may be interested to know that Canada's
only Scala lab, Toronto Image Works, will stop processing Scala
this fall.

There are a few options available for B&W slides. I summarized them
on a page at my site:

http://www.photosensitive.ca/BWslides.shtml

I think you will find some useful information there.

The LA lab to which Sanders referred Arlene, .dr5 at

<http://www.dr5.com/main.html>

claims to be the only Scala processor in Middle America (they're
moving to Denver to avoid LA costs) and the best in the USA. So they
must know about the rumor Arlene heard. I see they are also on the
page which Jordan referenced on his site.

Color Reflections which has labs all over the US offers Scala processing. Whether they do it in all locations or forward it to one place I don't know (www.color-reflections.com), also there is Main Photo Service Inc. (www.mainphoto.com). There is a list of labs at the Agfaphoto site, obviously there are other labs which are not listed, such as the mentioned .dr5, so it would appear that maybe the processing situation is not as grim as it seems.

A bit more unsettling is the news that the parent company of Agfaphoto gmbh has filed for bankruptcy (http://www.agfaphoto.com/en-US/pdf/AP_PressAnnouncement060205us.pdf), supposedly there will be no problem for worldwide divisions, as they are separate entities . . . we'll have to wait and see.

By the way Jordan, good page! very cleanly laid out and helpful.

The processing limitations kind of intrigued me, so I went looking.
It would seem that there isn't really anything different about Scala
reversal processing as from any other reversal process (that said I
haven't tried it yet). It would seem that anyone that can do E6 could
setup to do Scala. The only links with anything that could be called
helpful are these:
http://www.silverprint.co.uk/bwf2.html#SCALA
http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=007Ful
Note this is all I found so far, I've only spent about an hour
searching. Also note that the first link has a 4 step process that
they claim works with Scala and others.
So it would seem that anyone with a Jobo ATL1000 or better would be
able to handle this film, and any other clear base B/W film. For
anyone who loves this film, might be time to hit ebay for a used
ATL1000/1500. I know they can go for a lot ($1500+) or a little ($800
with lots of extras) depending on your luck. You could also do this
process by hand, but having done E6 in an inversion tank, I really
don't recommend this method, standing at the sink for an hour really
isn't what I like to do. If you buy an ATL1000, you might still be
able to buy the upgrade control panel to turn it into the (almost)
ATL1500 which has greater flexibilty for the programs, and a few
extra custom defined program spaces. I think the upgrade was around
$500 from Adorama. This and a good drum scanner might be a good
little bit of income for someone when all the rest of the labs stop
this process.

I think that DR5 is not an "authorized" Scala lab but rather they
run Scala in their own DR5 process. The results are apparently very
good.

DR5 recently moved from NYC to LA so I guess they are on the go again.
