Steve,
I've had good experience importing to the UK from a couple of
suppliers in the US (and no bad experience). Shipping costs are
high, but given good to very good exchange rates and the usual extreme
overpricing in the UK, total costs remain reasonable. You have to do
a bit of trial and error in balancing shipping method and
costs/quantities/weight but most of those who are willing to export
provide means of estimating the shipping cost during the checkout
process. Remember to allow for VAT/fees (usually about 22% in total
for orders of a few hundred USD value) - always charged on the express
shipping. Surprisingly it seems as though slow air-mail services are
almost as expensive as express couriers when 20 or 30 lbs of paper are
involved. I don't feel comfortable singling out the companies that
have done a good job, but those I've tried have been reasonably
efficient and very friendly and helpful.
