New class of cameras ? Sony DSC-R1

New class of cameras ? Sony DSC-R1

2005-09-08 by Ernst Dinkla

Not a DSLR, not a DRF, not a DCompact but probably usable for
most tasks and tastes the others where designed for. A real
hybrid with an APS 10.3 MP sensor !

And a Zeiss lens, to boot!

RE: [Digital BW] New class of cameras ? Sony DSC-R1

2005-09-08 by Paul Roark

Do we need a new forum for discussions of digital capture as it relates to
B&W? Perhaps all image capture issues -- scanning, film, etc. -- should be
on a new forum? Is there a way to link thread to this one so that we don't
all have to monitor another forum to be alerted to a thread of interest?

As it relates to the new Sony, how does the use of the sensor for viewing
affect image noise, if at all?

Does the viewing system use more battery power?

The viewing concept does make sense if there are no negative affects on the
image quality and battery use is reasonable.

Re: [Digital BW] digital Vs film: black only

2005-09-08 by djon43

Digital Vs Film.

I've just enjoyed David Sinai's Black Only print exchange...about half
of the images originated in film.

For various reasons, and but for one film image (mine..cropped from
800 color neg and desaturated) and one digital image (Steve K's), film
seemed significantly sharper, having more tonal excitement, even in
tiny 6X9 prints.

PLEASE comment with different impressions!

BO "grain", unlike film grain, remains fixed-size as the print size
varies and in this case worked to the disadvantage of the exchange's
little prints (8.5X11 paper, most prints under 6X9).

The images would inescapably appear more "dotty" if they were smaller,
and literally seem half as dotty at twice the size...unlike real grain
on silver paper.

I think this particular forum is already far too inkjet-technical to
benefit by yet-further rambles into arcane and inevitably intensely
consumerist digital camera discussions. So perhaps a parallel Yahoo
forum would be good. The new Sony seems tempting...but will it tether
to a laptop?

2005-09-11 by Michael Vendrell

Paul, I too miss TechP an(and Agfapan 25) especially in the 120 size. I
have quite a few old 8x10'' negs which so far i haven't found an economical
and good way to scan and only recently got good scans (d-max issues) from my
35 and 120 negs using the new Nikon 9000, I would think that this forum
would benefit from inclusion of all of the steps required to obtain GOOD B&W
digital prints - as long as it doesn't degerate into a brand-name war such
as others have decried. Thanks for your thoughtfulness.

I'm also new to this forum and don'tknow whether i should be responding on
the list site, altho' i'm having some technicalissues with using that site
- please advise me as to how i should procede and/or forward this to the
site,,,Thanks again...michael
