K7 in large format printers

K7 in large format printers

Ok. Who's using K7 in large format printers now? I haven't heard many
people discussing it in the last couple of weeks and that surprises me.

John, the guys I know doing large format are printing for clients, and though anxious to try
them do not have an extra 7 ink LF Epson laying about. Current clients used to the
Piezotones want me to stick with those hues. The catch 22 is that if I had another printer,
and could show them some big beautiful K7s, some may want to switch to them.
Anyway, I think that's why there isn't any LF K7 chatter yet. Need some individual LF artists to
buy into it. Also, as the x800 printers come out, more x600s will free up to try them.

Tyler,

That makes sense but I would have thought that some of our wealthier
brothers and sisters would have them going in some 7600 or 7000 by
now. Anyway I'm lookin forward to it as soon as my new main board gets
back from Micro. It looks like the 9800's are going to be hard to get
until the end of November. Not that I have any cash right now to even
think about that yet..

I have some k7 inks on the way and will report next week. However,
I'm not using the full k7 set in my 4000. I followed Jenny Ellerbe's
lead and I'm going with a dual quad setup in my 4000. I'll be using
the k7 matte K with the piezo carbon sepia grays (3 inks) for a warm
quad and with three of the k7 grays (inks 3, 5, and 7) for a neutral
quad on the other side. I'd rather have the flexibility of using two
quads with consistent colors that I like (plus the options of split
toning and blending when I want them) versus using just the k7
neutral setup for perhaps marginal improvement of tonal smoothness in
some prints.

John, I think there are folks out there, just not list people. I've
seen Tom's samples from his work. See this-
http://www.piezography.com/site/piezo-month-nov.html
But they were his own dilutions made from Piezotones before the K7s
were out, and they were 6, not 7, dilutions.
Really beautiful.

Thanks for that link. Good deal. That is what I want to do as well,
use 6 channels of the neutral set. What I'll have to decide is whether
to use QTR and linearize it throught that or purchase Studio Print and
a pc. I have the demo version of it now and I'll check it out on my
girlfrieds ibm first as a comparison to QTR.

That work by Tom Mallone seems very subtle. Nice. He's calling them
all Hextone prints. How did he get ahold of those K7 inks so early to
have all this work done and in a gallery for sale like that? He moves
fast doesn't he?

StudioPrint has allowed for 6 partitioned blacks for a while now. Before there were the K7s
from IJM some were mixing their own dilitutions of 6 to use with StudioPrint. Tom was
pretty much spearheading those experiements and talking to Ergosoft.
K7s weren't out yet, they came after along with Ergosoft's anounced intention of moving
up to 7 supported Ks. I think Tom still mixes his own hues and dilutions from the
Piezotone sets and uses a 6 ink printer, hence Hextones...

Hello John,

>That work by Tom Mallone seems very subtle. Nice. He's calling
>them all Hextone prints.

I like his work very much - enjoyed the gallery. I see the complete
phrase he's using is "Hextone Carbon Ink photograph", with the "Carbon
Ink" part emphasized in bold type. So I guess he's trying to say it's
a Carbon Ink print made with 6 inks (as opposed to 1 or 2 or 4 inks).

I'm glad to see this, as Carbon Ink is also my favorite term for what
we do. I'm glad to see someone with some stature using it. Maybe it
will catch on.

Regards,
Clayton

I stumbled on this the other day: (sorry for the earlier post - not sure
what happened)

Click on the Carbro Printing link. They seem to have quite a different
definition of "carbon print" or "pigment print". I guess the word "ink"
makes the difference...?

[Digital BW] Re: K7 in large format printers

2005-09-16 by john dean

Thanks Steve,

That description was very detailed and clear.

Why in the name of God anyone would want to go through all that in the
year 2005 is beyond anything I can possibly imagine! Can you imagine
how many flawed prints ended up in the trash.

Yes Clayton, I'd much prefer using the term "ink" than spending weeks
with transfer tissue, enlarged negatives, and dicromate (just to start).

John

Re: K7 in large format printers

Maybe those should be retitled as carbon-gelatin prints since inks
have been used as a base for the process in the past also. The term
silver-gelatine seems to be current. That way all could be satisfied.
Ho. Ho. Ho. Probably not.

Absolutely. We don't want those old fashoned carbro prints confused
with our clearly superior inkjet prints. They need to show some
respect and get with it.

Duane,

>Ho. Ho. Ho. Probably not.

Brave soul. Try that and we might be mourning your premature demise
<g>. About four years ago a huge online flame war raged for some
weeks, during which Carbon Print folks expressed great outrage because
inkjet folks were "hijacking" their art form by calling their work
"Carbon Prints". What emerged after the dust settled was a general
agreement not to use "Carbon Print", and several alternative terms
emerged including "Carbon Ink print" and "Carbon Pigment Print", among
others. I wrote about this, including some arguments in favor of
Carbon Ink Print, in the "What To Call Them" article on the web link
below. That's why I was glad to see Tom Mallone using it.

A lot of people just coming in to inkjet printing aren't aware of this
history, so the subject pops up now and then.

Regards,
Clayton

John, would you keep us posted on your evaluation of StudioPrint?

Tyler, is there a forum dedicated to StudioPrint?

Thanks.

Sorry, not to my knowledge.
Or perhaps they are keeping it a secret from me...
