Matting and Framing

2005-11-09 by steveh0607

Hello Everyone,

I shoot digital (Nikon D70). The aspect ratio of this camera is not the same as a film
camera. For instance, if I set the image height for 10 inches, the width will be 6.67 (to
keep the proper aspect ratio). As best I know, I have to oversize the print then monkey
around with the cropping to get an 8x10. Most of the time I don't like to crop because I'm
careful about in-camera framing.

However, precut matts are all sized for film camera aspect ratios (8x10, 11x14, etc).

So....I have to get my matts custom cut to fit the print. This is expensive.

Is there something I'm not getting? Is there a way around this problem, or do I have to
keep getting custom cut matts?

Help!

Steve

The D70 has the same 2:3 Aspect Ratio as 35mm film which is 24x36mm (and
which is cropped to most common print sizes). The only common print size
that properly fits 35mm film is 4x6.

The solution is to crop to the print size, like the printer will with
35mm or get custom mats.

Insofar as I know there is no way to avoid custom mat cutting. For one
thing, prints have to be elevated slightly (bottom margin slightly more than
top margin) for the eye to perceive optical center. All the pre-cut mats I
have seen have the window cut dead center in the mat.

fyi www.lightimpressionsdirect.com offers a huge array of precut
matte and frame sizes and designs, and offers custom sizes via online
order.

Online is certainly cheaper than driving somewhere and dealing with a
local frame shop, but you miss the personal pleasure. Great service,
but you should review the prices as I suspect they're not cheap. I buy
neg files and storage system items from them.
