European print exchange arrived

European print exchange arrived

2001-12-29 by Bernie Ess

Nij,
I received the photos today, thank you for the work you did for everybody...

I like your portrait quite a bit, a very expressive female face.. In fact -
people is what I would also like to do more in the future, I am just not yet
sure enough with the camera handling and shooting technique (also
confidence) to shoot people, so for now I still do more non- human stuff :-)

Greetings Bernhard

P.S.: the germans - including me - have written the longest explanations -
We talk too much... LOL !

A public thanks to Nigel from me as well.

Bernhard, find a friend who is willing to put up with you for an hour
or less, then another, then another. They may or may not like the
results, but if they don't, their mothers probably will. If they do
like them, they will be easier to pursuade to sit again.

Bernhard,

Glad to hear your package arrived safe-and-sound - and of course that you
liked my image ;)

As Tim suggests - give it a go - get friends and family to give you some
time and use up some film! I really like the simple studio-flash setup used
for that shot - but if you have no flash - try daylight.

As for telling the model how to pose, I don't to that too much - but I do
find that explaining to the person who is modelling for me what I am doing
"only your head and shoulders" or "you in the whole room" then I find that
helps them... I pretend like the camera is the annoying thing getting in the
way of our conversation ;) All that of course only applies in a posed
situation, every other time you just got to know the people (I'm no street
photographer really!) - otherwise, just take the camera out on a family walk
or something.

Take care...

I've been away for most of Christmas so I have only just had a chance to really look at the images. I am very impressed at the very high standard of printing and image-making and thanks to all for sharing their work. - A particular thanks to Nij for organising it.

I am reluctant to get into the kind of image print quality analysis that I have witnessed from one of the other print exchanges. I know that we are a group of people with much interest in the output quality of our prints but I still strongly think that it is the intrinsic image qualities and one's emotional reaction to it that is the point of image making.

So, as far as PQ is concerned I have no problems and, indeed much satisfaction, with all of the prints but if I had to pick out the three that will be hanging on my personal little wall then special thanks to Nina, Keith Bingham and Mike Stone.

Incidentally Mike would you be willing to share your experiences with your home made lens. Inspired by Mark Tuckers 'Plunger Cam' I am in the process of attaching a rather large medium format loupe to the front of my Rollei SL66. I am hoping for some interesting and serendipitous distortions.

All the best for 2002

I want to add my thanks to Nij for organising the exchange and to all the
other participants for sharing their work, it is such a pleasure to see how
differently we all see things and with the bonus of comparing the results of
our different techniques using these new methods.

Wishing you all a great 2002

Regards
