upcoming show

2005-11-28 by Matti Koskinen

Hi all,

Firstly warm thanks to all on this list. Without your knowledge, I would
never come this far. I have a one man show on a local art gallery in
january and I've been printing the prints. I have a HP deskjet 9800,
which, as strange it sounds, prints stunning BO prints. Don't know if
it's the subject (minimalism) or what, but the prints look better on
epson radiant white watercolour paper black-only. The prints printed
with 3 greys are ok, but BO has the punch in it.

So much for that. Now I need advice on how to frame the pictures for the
show. I have some 50 pictures (it's not a small place) so just framing
everything costs too much. The prints are mainly super-B sized and I'm
thinking just to mount them on a cardboard without any frames and the
cardboard cutted to the size of the print, so no extra space around the
print. I've framed some of the prints and they're on the wall here in my
home, but I must truly say, I dislike the glass. Maybe a non-glaring
glass would be ok, but I doubt I can get it this soon and the cost as
I'm already invested enough money for this project.

As I said, the prints are minimalistc B&W prints, so I think the display
can also be minimalistic. But as january is coming nearer and nearer
every day and so is my sleep, I'd really much like to hear so advices in
this matter. I'm happy with the prints (more than happy) but I'd like
also the show to succeed (it could be my ticket to the stars)

thanks

What are the gallery requirments; usually the director or curator dicate the types of frames, and whether the images need to be hung salon style.

Congrats on the show. Also nice to hear that the HP 9800 does good BO
prints. There are lots of Black Only lovers out there who will be
interested to hear that. I still use BO as well as K3. Some images
just look great with it.

Understood, it's a huge expense. However it's only that huge the
first time. Any unsold frames, if carefully stored to avoid
scratching, can be reused next time.

It's your art so you can do whatever looks good to you. Here are some
things to think about:

1) Not sure what you mean by "mount" (permanent or temporary), but be
sure that whatever is used is acid free. Cardboard probably isn't
wise. Acid free foam core might be better.

2) If they are unglazed, think about dust, people touching them,
sneezing, etc. Can they be cleaned? Perhaps spraying them would be
called for...

3) What will a buyer be able to do with them? If they are mounted
flush without borders, can they be easily matted and framed if the
buyer wants to do that?

Just some thoughts. Good luck with the show.

Regards,
Clayton

You might take a look at the "clip" frames from
http://www.quadroclip.com/quadroclip.html They are reasonably
inexpensive and unobtrusive. You mount your pix to acid-free board,
them sandwich them between the masonite-like backer board and the
glass or plastic. (I don't know if this is non-glare.) They make
custom sizes that are available with non-glare polystyrene, both 1mm
and 2mm. I used these some time ago for a large show, and really
liked the minimalist look. They were cheap enough that I gave them
away with a print purchase.
