I only post occasionally, but think others might be interested in this,
as well.

For several years, I've been "floating" my large prints (30X40) on
acid free foam core. The surface is a rag paper with a little texture,
and they look pretty handsome hinged with linen tape (hidden on the
back) and a 3 or 4 inch border between print and frame.
The problem is that I can't find anyone who sells the foam core with a
white surface paper. All I can find in NYC is an off white/ cream
colored surface.
That works for many photographs, but there are those others where it
absolutely does not work.

Can anyone suggest a source or two for 3/8 or 1/4 inch foam core? Right
now the only alternative I can think of is to dry mount a white sheet
of acid free
art paper on top of the existing piece, but as you can imagine, it's a
laborious process. It would be great to find a source - either local
or on the web.

Thanks,

Clayton Price

Re: Acid Free Foam Core?

A couple of you suggested painting the off white paper on the surface
of the foam core - to white. An interesting idea, but we're talking
about a
fine art print which has to be of museum quality and both as archival
and attractive as the papers we print on , One can't plan on either of
those
for paint on paper, IMO.
Also someone else suggested Light Impressions as a source -
unfortunately, they don't have it either.

Thank you all so far - please keep the suggestions coming:-)

Hi Clay,
An inconvenient and time consuming solution would be to dry mount a
2ply archival board of your color choice to the foam core. Not sure
it would be worth the effort if there are other sources for what you
seek.

[Digital BW] Re: Acid Free Foam Core?

2005-11-29 by Leon Strembitsky

Clayton,

As a custom picture framer who is also a photographer I can tell you
that I've tried or investigated just about every foamboard out there
and the one that I've settled on is Artcare Archival Foamboard by
Nielsen Bainbridge. Try this link if you'd like to read a little
about it from their site: http://www.nielsen-
bainbridge.com/Bainbridge/NB-Foamboard.html , it's the most rigid
foamboard with the whitest surface I've come across (that's also
archival, there's lots that are stiffer and whiter but not archival).
Hope this helps and doesn't just muddy the waters. Oh, one last
thing, unfortunately it is also the most expensive one I've found.
Hasn't stopped me from using it though.

Be well,
Leon Strembitsky

Re: [Digital BW] Re: Acid Free Foam Core?

2005-11-30 by Don

Hi-
I noticed that several people have recommended sources so I won't
repeat. This is a very important issue. The color of the matte is
critical to the the perception on of the colors and tones in the image.
Forget expense. If you must, print a pale grey tone on a backing paper
and mount it to archival board. Use a great matte paper, one you'd print
final images on.

Floating an image means a whole new set of rules. If the mount is
slightly, almost imperceptively darker than the highlights in the image,
the image will "pop" and seem to float.

Printing the background in a float also allows you to control the color
on very subtle ways. Even if it's B&W, remember how we perceive warm and
cool colors, receding and advancing, even if the diferrences are subtle.

Anyway, my opinion. When we vary from "straight" prints, we should have
fun and subtly play with perception. For those of you who haven't tried
it, tear deckle edges in the image of a print and float it. Completely
different than a matted print. Try it, add it to your toolkit and use it
where appropriate.

[Digital BW] Re: Acid Free Foam Core?

2005-11-30 by djon43

Why not aluminum or formica, per permanent exhibit practice? (as
opposed to trade shows and architects' panels, where foam core makes
sense)

Consensus among exhibit designers and exhibit-oriented photo labs has
forever been that foam core should be used only when the client
accepts that images will be shown, probably damaged, soon discarded...

When aluminum mount requires greater physical depth (like foam core),
it's standard to mount on a wooden frame.

We're talking about framed archival fine art photography here -- a
very different genre' from exhibit and display. The archival foam core
has a top surface of an art paper something like Strathmore, Fabriano,
etc. The "clients" are museums, galleries, collectors, and the archival
foam core is basically
a filler behind the photograph. This is an alternative to cutting a
matte for a 30 X 40 B&W print. The life of prints framed in this
manner [hopefully]
will be valued long after exhibit oriented pieces have bit the dust.
On another topic, djon, most folks on this forum seem to sign their
real names at the bottom of their post. That would be nice.

"Clay," I didn't suggest higher quality mounting (aluminum, formica)
to make you testy.

Exhibit designers with long museum/gallery experience and highly
demanding customers specify mounting methods according to an exhibit's
projected life.

Sometimes they specify foam core (cheap shipping, cheap labor). But
keep your hand on your wallet when foam core is claimed to be suitable
for any long term.

It's hard enough to believe "archival" labels on photo papers and
pigments. When copy writers apply it to foam core, not even bothering
to document the claim, it's a stretch!

" The MicroChamber products incorporated in this board effectively
remove many harmful compounds such as phenols, ethanoic and methanoic
acid, sulfur dioxide, ammonia, and formaldahyde. Covering material on
the white board is off white and buffered."

1) "many" harmful compounds are removed, not "all" or "most".
2) "buffered" indicates "not archival" when we speak of paper.
3) No definition or basis for "archival" is cited.
