MIS plugs

MIS plugs

2005-11-28 by Paul Roark

There are a couple of threads that seem to be identifying the plugs in the
clear carts as problems. I've used a lot of these carts and seem to have
avoided the problem - maybe it's just luck. For what it's worth, I use a
very small ("jeweler's"?) screwdriver, like the type one gets in the
eyeglass repair kits, to remove the plugs. I've been able to get it down by
the side of the plugs and lift them out without making any holes in the
plugs.

As one of those describing problems (on a 1290 and 1270s) I should
make it clear that I believe "support" (Rob) at MIS when he tells me
that problems are rare. I accept that I was either unlucky or doing
something wrong.
Looking at the carts I had problems with, some of the leaks were due
to the holes the plugs were going into, rather than the plugs
themselves. This belief is supported by leaks occurring in the same
slot after exchanging plugs, and a couple of cases where the "new"
hollow plugs were conspicuously loose fitting (no chance they would
seal). (I put "new" in quotes as the last two carts I got, two weeks
ago, were back to the original plugs.)

If I was still interested in using these I would try silicone sealant,
but I print slightly too much for frequent refilling of tiny carts.

The first clear C82 clear carts I received had no open fill hole at all.
So, I bought a drill to make my own. Maybe a badly-made hole should be
sealed and the cart re-drilled.

I also think the 1270 - 90 color carts are more prone to problems compared
to the individual carts of the more modern printers. I suspect it could
relate to the need to have 5 pegs and holes that are lined up perfectly. I
suspect a slight misalignment might cause air to leak in, causing in-curable
bad nozzle checks, and ink to leak out. I'm speculating here. Nonetheless,
I think it's time Epson replaces the 1280-90 with a modern hextone with
individual carts -- but they haven't asked me.

That fits with my experience: more than once I found a problematic
cart (leaks or printing problems) worked much better when switched to
another printer (1270/1290).
