Additional organizing software...

2002-01-06 by lyonscox

Same thing here but wanted to have separate threads. Thanks to those
who responded recently about storage and organization software. It's
made me look at 'how' I'm doing it now and what could be better.

Could people comment (once again) on systems they are using and what
in particular features they feel are critical to help them. One
impression I got from looking at some of the software was larger
thumbnails than explorer provides and a search feature (if you are
disciplined enough) to find files when text description is attached.

Thanks, again, for the input. Learning seems to be at least a two
stage process for me :-) on the short side.

I'm using Thumbs + from http://www.cerious.com for image databases. I
didn't spend a lot of time comparing that to other packages, but it
does most of what I need, providing a thumbnailed database of my off-
line storage.

Cleavis,
I've found Cumulus S5.0 (CANTO)to be excellent for naming and categorizing
photos. It is a bit more complicated to set up at first but once the
directories are set-up the actual assignment of the photos to these
directories is easy & search parameters are excellent.. I've also used Photo
Explorer 7.0 Pro (U LEAD) much easier to set-up but not as detailed an
interface. It has a nice screen saver/slide show piece to it. Finally, I
really like the program entitled Pica View (ACD SYSTEMS), an add-on to
Windows explorer which may fit your request for a nice thumbnail viewer
without having to open up a image database program. It is really a nifty
little add-on I use constantly.

Just a quick web address...for Pica view, it piqued my interest as an
idea (but will do some shopping perhaps).

The one problem I've found when researching these programs (and I
haven't tried Cumulus yet) is that they have a problem with
previewing Layered Photoshop files (layers & channels intact). Some
will work ok if you've saved the file with backward compatibility
(essentiallyy saves a flattened version along with the layered
version) but this increases the file size dramatically. It's an
inconsistant problem and I've had tons of email contact with various
tech support people about this. Even top programs like Portfolio5
fail on this score.

Frank, have you found anything that can read PS layers?

Thanks

When you ask if these programs can read layered images, do you mean to make
thumbnails of them? I think most of these programs can.

I know at least Portfolio and Iview Media Pro can thumbnail layered images.
Both are pretty easy to work with; you can just take a folder of images and
drag and drop them onto an open window and these programs will thumbnail
them. From there you can sort them by various criteria. There very helpful.

I'm not a heavy user, so I can't tell you which program is really better,
but my current preference is for Iview Media. It seems a bit faster, has a
slightly more robust feature set than Portfolio, and it can display lots of
file types, like MP3s, PDFs, etc.

I wonder why your efforts with layered images failed. Maybe you need to
allocate more RAM to the program if you are using it for large files. Or
perhaps something was set in the preferences to only *display* certain file
types, like jpegs, or something screwy like that.

For the PC I think there are a couple that are said to be good and are
reasonably priced, I think one might even be free. I think one is called
Thumbsplus, and the other Infranview. Something like that....

Todd,
I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but with Cumulus I'm able to catalog my
files (assets-cumulus calls then) in the catalogs I form with the software.
A thumbnail of the saved file will appear and can be opened up in any
program supporting that file extension (which includes its own viewer); even
if it is a .psd file but I guess if I wanted to just to see one layer of the
psd file I would have to open it with Photoshop , which a choice the
program gives me when I right click on the file thumbnail. Hope this helps.

Oh, so you are saying you want to be able to view an image's layers inside
of the thumbnail program? I highly doubt any will do that, these programs
are designed to be databases, not image editors. Reading individual layers
and channels would adversely affect their speed and the size of their
database files. Mind if I ask why you want that feature from a database
program?

Actually,

I-View Media pro lets you do that.
In preview mode if the image has multiple layers you get a little
floating palette that lets you view the image one layer at a time.

I have never found this particularly useful but it is there if you need
it.

you can get a demo version at http://www.iview-multimedia.com/

I find this to be perhaps the best desktop database for single user
image management.

I don't. Perhaps my post wasn't as clear as it should be. The
programs couldnt view/preview the file Because it was layered. They
displayed an error message saying that.

iView Media Pro (3.1) for the Mac will thumbnail and preview PS
files with layers. Another Mac organizer app worth looking at is
Apple's new iPhoto. Free download at:

Requires OS 10.1
