ConvertToBW Pro

ConvertToBW Pro

2006-02-03 by Stephen Kobrin

After reading some posts earlier this week I donwloaded ConvertToBW pro
and have been trying it out. As opposed to some of the more
technically adept on the list, I don't think I could replicate it with
the PS Channel Mixer! Question: I have been using the Prefilter
and/or Color Response tabs to do the conversion but have stayed away
from the Contrast tab under the assumption that contrast adjustments
are better done in PS itself. Is that assumption reasonable.

Thanks to whomever it was that mentioned this product in the first
place. It is much easier to see what you are doing and the effect on
the image than when switching channels in the Channel Mixer.

Well I don't know, I've been using the exposure and contrast sliders
ever since I started using the thing and I think I get pretty good
results. Converting to B&W is just about the last thing I do in my
workflow before saving the file for printing.

I have made several B&W prints using this software, followed by a few
adjustments in PS CS2, and printing with QTRgui. It is a straightforward
procedure without the challenging sophistications of other methods.

Steve:
I have a chart (I didn't create it) that describes the channel mixer
settings that mimic a wide range of B&W films similar to
ConverttoBWPro. Contact me off list if you or anyone is interested and
I'll send it to you. For some reason I can't post it in the files
section. But yes, the plug-in is nifty.

I'm a huge fan of Convert to B&W Pro...

I move up the contrast slider to where the preview image kind of snaps too contrasty, and
then back it down a bit. Usually ends up being somewhere between 3.5 and 4.2

But I'm really into high contrast, so that still may be too much for some.

Anyway, below are some pix of mine, most using Convert to B&W Pro. I still use the
Gradient Map method from time to time...

need to fix the sky or some other tone, then choose one of the response tabs, usually the
Tri-X one (it just almost always seems to look the best). And I always use the exposure
and contrast sliders. When I'm done I open it up again in PS and touch up anything that
may need it...levels, curves again, whatever.

I love Convert to BW Pro. It's a good tool and easy to use.

Lou -

I've been a constant user of ConverttoBWPro for several years, but am
always interested in alternatives. I'd appreciate receiving a copy of
that chart as well.

Does it address the element of the plug-in that I find the most useful -
the color contrast filters?

Cheers,
Kip

Some Photoshop Channel Mixer settings emulating various films can be
found on the following link. Don't know if they're are the same as
what the original poster had in mind.

Yep those are the same values.

I just made a PDF of the above so feel free to download and share. It will be up until I can
post it in the Files section.

The moderator just posted my chart of Photoshop channel mixer settings
to the files section under image processing. Dig in. No need to email
me anymore but it was nice to meet everyone who did. Thanks

I made a PDF of the same info...I'll take the link down in a few days. Maybe the moderator
would like to place this in the files section also?

Ditto here. Or maybe the mod/owner can show you how to properly post it to the files section.
