It wouldn't be preferable to a 1280, which can print better overall
prints. But it was the first good printer that could take a continuous
inking system with quad inks, and turn out photo quality prints. A lot
of photographers bought it and were quite happy. THe 1280 has smaller
dot patterns and gives smoother, but not sharper results. Either printer
is excellent, but why not go with the 1280 and get the latest
technology? You still need a CIS system, (Niagara, from
http://www.mediastreet.com ) and a set of quad inks if you are primarily
into black and white printing.

the 1160 is/was much cheaper than the 1280 and the CIS systems for it
are also much cheaper, add to this that you don't have to mess with
chipped cartridges makes it easier to set up and use... but the 1280
is probably better.

The money I saved going with an 1160 will go a long way toward buying
a good digital camera...
