Semi-Matte and R220 banding
2006-04-02 by Roger
I spent part of the weekend trying to see if I could find *any* settings to work with the R220 and UT-R2 inks with Epson semi- matte. I printed off a 24 step greyscale wedge I use to test papers, and my printer was freshly aligned after I put in the PK cartridge. I tried different paper type settings (UPGPP, GPP, PSG, Luster) set to Photo RPM and Best Photo, and gamma of 1.8 and 2.2, but couldn't find a setting which printed without banding in the dark colors. On prints where there wasn't much banding (thin lines) there were density differences within the dark patches, making them look pretty uneven. I'm about to give up on this paper unless anyone has any suggestions. Premium Glossy Photo Paper looks much better (no banding, smooth greyscale) although Paul's ICC has too much shadow separation for my taste, so I don't plan to use this paper either.
