Innova Gloss: roller marks

Innova Gloss: roller marks

2006-04-10 by chipcarterdc

Sorry if this has already been brought up. I just got a couple of
packs of this paper and have been testing it on my Epson 9800. In
images with continuous areas of black, I'm noticing roller marks. Do I
need to change the suction or platen gap to account for this thickness
of this paper? (I've never needed to change either before, so I don't
know much about changing them). The roller marks aren't horrible and
the average customer might not even notice them unless inspecting the
print closely, but they are noticeable in areas of continuous black if
you're looking for it.

Or does it need more drying time as it's passing thru? (I should
mention that I was printing at 2880dpi high speed, which I normally
don't do, but I was in a hurry).

Thanks!

(It's a phenomenal paper, BTW. I like it quite a bit better than
Crane's Silver Rag).

It could be your profile is laying down too much black. See if you can
back off on the max black with a curves adjustment just to check it
out. I had a lot of trouble with the Ilford gloss papers doing just
this with an inadequate profile.

Changing to the "regular" speed might give you the dry time you need.
If not you could try and adjust the inkdensity slider (if present) in
the driver. And if that's not their, or it doesn't fix the problem, you
will have to play the paper game in the driver. Change to different
paper types until you find one that give a correct amount of ink on the
paper, then make a profile for those settings.

Or get a RIP that lets you control the ink limits (among other things).

Thanks for your responses. I'll try again with high speed off and see
if it makes any difference before I start mesisng around with the ink
density slider.

Re: media type, I used Epson Premium Semi-Gloss as the profile and the
media type, figuring it was the closest match. Is this what other
people are using for Profile and Media Type? As far as Media Type (not
Profile) goes, Epson Semi-gloss is significantly thinner than the
Innova, so I also wonder whether that could be part of the problem with
roller marks. So I guess I have 2 separate questions (a) is Epson Semi
Gloss the best match in terms of profile and (b) is it the best match
in terms of media type?

I used Epson Premium Semigloss as media type for a CMYK profile I
made for use with the ColorBurst RIP, but I also used high speed
off. No problems with roller marks that I could see in solid black
areas. This was with an Epson 4000.
