Hello, I know this is a little OT, but not completely, so I was hoping someone might want to chime in if they have experience making digital negs with an inkjet/imagesetter and then making platinum prints with them. Please let me know on/off the board. I'm reading Dan's book now, but I'm a youngun and don't have a traditional darkroom. That could change though with prices as low as they are. Any insights, annoyances, wishes, etc with the process are appreciated. Thanks, Guhan

You should give Bostick & Sullivan, a call in Santa Fe, NM at 505-474- 0890. They are one of the best suppliers of Pt/Pd and other alt. supplies out there. You want to ask for Kevin Sullivan. He will talk to you as long as you want, and answer all your questions. I am fortunate enough to live just up the road from their office here in Santa Fe, and he really helped me tremendously in the beginning, but I understand Kevin is helpful to all who call him. The one thing you need to get is a dedicated printer for dye inks, because pigment inks do not stick to the Pictorico clear film for making digital negatives. I would get an Epson R220 for this purpose. It takes a lot of trial/error and testing, and keeping notes, but once you get a formula figured out for your own ink/printer/lighting exposure system, you'll be making really nice Pt/Pd prints on a consistent basis, without a darkroom. Good luck. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, G Guhan Gunaratnam <guruguhan@...> wrote: > > Hello, > > I know this is a little OT, but not completely, so I was hoping someone > might want to chime in if they have experience making digital negs with an > inkjet/imagesetter and then making platinum prints with them. > > Please let me know on/off the board. I have begun investigating making digital negs. I am taking a palladium printing class in Europe this summer and want to take some enlarged negatives with me. I have no large format negatives and hope to enlarge some of my 35mm negs to take with me. However, from what I have read so far it doesn't appear to be as simple as just "making negatives". It seems like it is all a coupled process -- that the negatives need to be "tuned" to the printing process. At this point, I have no idea what this process is going to be. Also, I have an Epson R2400 printer and have yet to find any info on how to use this printer to print on the Pictorico film material. Obviously I have a lot to learn. check out dan burkholder website, he has lots of tips on making digital negatives, including profiles for a wide variety of printers, etc.

I have not been making negatives for platinum but I have been doing inkjet negatives for silver and I have to say they are better than I had imagined. I started out several years ago with an epson 1200 hoping to make negatives that I could print with and was terribly disappointed. Things have improved considerably and the negs I am making with my 1280 are wonderful. It is very much a tuned process. Since we are trying to make the best possible prints it only makes sense that you would want to tune your negs to the printing medium. I use a spectorphotometer to measure the densities in the final prints and this makes it fairly easy to tune the negs. Scott www.scotthendershot.com

David, You really need to make negatives that fit your process; not just platinum/palladium but your platinum/palladium. There are many variables that can come into play. Mark Nelson sells an ebook on it. Dan Burkholder has wonderful methods. I have made them using an Epson 7000 and Cones' Sepia ink set on UCF from Photo Warehouse. I am now running new curves for the 4800 and K3 inks on Pictorico. If you don't know platinum/palladium printing, I would advise you to get your files prepared to print at 360 dpi grayscale images as you would like them to look and take them with you. I am sure that you'll be able to get output there and your files will be already set with the exception of invert and curves. You can do colorized negs, B&W negs, or I am using the advanced B&W and making a PYRO looking neg. Your negs that you use in the platinum class may or may not work when you get home. The variables may like light source, chemicals, developer, etc might mean that you'll need to make new negs. However, you should learn enough to know how when you get there. I have had really first class results by making negs through Photoshop with the Pictorico film using Burkholders curves. www.danburkholder.com. However that has been about 3 years ago and there is another alternative method that some swear by that is described in a book by Mark Nelson who contacted me about this a coupel of years ago. I have yet to try it. Too many irons in the fire. Here is the link- http://www.precisiondigitalnegatives.com/ You should be able to fine tune excellent negatives with either of these methods. Be sure to use good paper. For me that was the most important variable, using the paper designed expecially for plat/palladium printing. John

For me that was the most > important variable, using the paper designed expecially for > plat/palladium printing. There are many many papers that work, and you don't need to get one specifically made for platinum printing. And quite honestly the biggest problem many printers have with platinum/palladium is failure to understand the importance of humidity; both during coating and during exposure that effects how the coating is absorbed into the paper as well as speed and contrast. With all the changes in inks and printers over the last few years, digital negatives to me, provide a new opportunity to play with PS than many other in the digital landscape. Ann, Yes I am contact printing them. Yes they do work out. I have been doing both imagesetter negs and inkjet negs. The imagesetter negs can be a bit sharper but the control afforded by doing the negs on location with an inkjet gives them the edge for me. I found that tuning the process takes a few iterations. It's pretty easy and quick to make a new test neg when the equipment is right there. Sending out for imagesetter negs really prolongs the tuning process. I don't know how to relate the quality in an email. I feel that the contact prints I am making are beautiful. They are sharp, smooth and have wonderful gradation and tonality with detail in the shadows and highlights. But each viewer will have to decide for themselves. Lets just say that if inkjet prints are acceptable to you then contact prints from inkjet negs should be at least acceptable. I prefer them to the "pigment on paper" prints that I make (although I love the pigment on paper prints for their own unique look and feel) because I love the look of silver gelatin prints. These contact prints are no less sharp or any less smooth than putting the pigment on paper directly (IMO.) They are of course much more work to make. There is definately time spent tuning the process and then when the process is tuned you have extra steps to go through for every print that you make. I happen to love the process as well as the product so I find it to be a rich experience. Just for the record I am not trying to make a case that silver prints are better than inkjet prints. I produce, love and accept both. Scott www.scotthendershot.com

I have not been making negatives for platinum but I have been doing inkjet
negatives for silver and I have to say they are better than I had imagined.
I started out several years ago with an epson 1200 hoping to make negatives
that I could print with and was terribly disappointed. Things have improved
considerably and the negs I am making with my 1280 are wonderful.
It is very much a tuned process. Since we are trying to make the best
possible prints it only makes sense that you would want to tune your negs to
the printing medium. I use a spectorphotometer to measure the densities in
the final prints and this makes it fairly easy to tune the negs.

Subject: [Digital BW] RE: Anyone using digital negatives to make Platinum
prints?
I have begun investigating making digital negs.
I am taking a palladium printing class in Europe this summer and want to
take some enlarged negatives with me. I have no large format negatives and
hope to enlarge some of my 35mm negs to take with me.
However, from what I have read so far it doesn't appear to be as simple as
just "making negatives". It seems like it is all a coupled process -- that
the negatives need to be "tuned" to the printing process.
At this point, I have no idea what this process is going to be.
Also, I have an Epson R2400 printer and have yet to find any info on how to
use this printer to print on the Pictorico film material.
Obviously I have a lot to learn.
Dave.
