BEWARE NIKON 5000

BEWARE NIKON 5000

2002-01-14 by toomagenta@aol.com

FWIW, I just returned a Nikon 5K due to a problem with its' inability
to disable the internal flash when a radio transmitter is attached to
the hot shoe. The instruction booklet as well as Nikon tech support
state that the internal flash is automatically disengaged when a
flash accessory is attached to the hot shoe. This is not the case
with the unit I purchased, nor could I get this feature to work on
two other units I tried.Photographers who need to fire studio and
location strobes BEWARE.
Nikon tech told me they did not know IF or WHEN a firmware update
would be created. But they did admit I was not the first to complain
about this deficiency.

Canon G2 - Was BEWARE NIKON 5000

I also recently returned a Nikon 5000, for problems with the flash
and also because of significant color abberrations between light/dark
adjacent areas.

I purchased the Canon G2 instead, and it is a beauty of a camera. I
am printing up to about 13" in the long dimension on my Epson 1200
(with color pigments) that are, IMHO, as good as prints from 35 mm
scans from an Imacon scanner.

The Canon G2 is well designed, a pleasure to use, and has some great
features. . . . It's much better than any other "point and shoot"
I've ever used, and is much closer in quality and experience to a
Canon SLR, except that you have the immediacy of digital.

I also think the Canon G2 is great. A real possibility of replacing
35mm film in a quality camera that can point and shoot in auto or
manual mode (which is slower/less intuitive than conventional SLR at
this point). Had it about 2.5 months.

Have used the movie mode, macro, landscape, portrait, panoramic (&
stitch) all with great ease. The wide angle lens arrived today.
While I don't like that the tube adapter is plastic (LA-DC58) the
lens itself is a nice looking piece of glass (WC-DC58). Makes for
about a 28mm without resorting to the stitch mode.

Sincerely,
Cleavis

I read in the PDN Forum an explanation about the inability to
turn off the internal flash on the Nikon 5000. It was explained
that when a flash or radio slave is attached to the hot shoe, the
internal flash is automatically disabled, however it continues to
fire a very reduced burst. The explanation the users on that
forum received from Nikon was that this is only a pre-flash, and
that its power would not affect overall exposure. Some testing
was done by a user and he came to the conclusion that this was
indeed what was happening, because as he measured it, the
internal flash was firing at only 1/10 of what was necessary to
create a proper exposure.
Thought you might find that interesting.

George, what are the specs and cost of the G2?
