UT-3D spectro graphs

UT-3D spectro graphs

2006-05-05 by Paul Roark

I've posted some graphs that show spectrophotometer readings of test strips
printed with the UT-3D beta inkset and some initial profiles I've made. For
comparison 2400 "Advanced B&W" and UT-R2 test strip graphs are also
included.

See http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/UT-3D-Comparison.pdf

In these profiles (curves) I've used the paper white to define "neutral."
I'm increasingly inclined to think that the hues or tones of the print look
most "neutral" when they match the paper. On the other hand, I also find
that cold blacks look blacker. The graphs and inkset show these
preferences.

The main thing that is holding up the inkset release is my indecision as to
the tone of the LK. I'm currently inclined to have the inkset include a
neutralized LK that, on HPR prints with a midtone maximum Lab b = 1.8 in the
midtone, rolling off to blend with Eboni in the deep shadows. Lab a = 1.4 +
- 0.2. See the posted 2400 test strip graph for comparison. The purpose
for this is, in part, to get an ink in the MIS inventory that can be used in
2k printers to make an easy 2-ink B&W.

All suggestions are most welcomed. I'd like to get the inkset going as soon
as possible.

RE: [Digital BW] OK, Paul, what's UT-3D?

I posted a short preview of it at,
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint/message/73803

I haven't had time to write up a full "Readme" file on it, and MIS has not
released it yet. It will be in their next newsletter, I believe.

The charts at http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/3D-Comparison.htm show the
relative evenness of tones that can be achieved.

I think the inkset will work on virtually all Epson 6 and 7 ink printers.

With the importance of Crane Silver Rag and the like, the ability to print
on glossy paper with the same dmax as PK even when Eboni is loaded is most
convenient.

When it is initially launched I'd recommend it only to those experienced
with making RGB or rip curves-profiles. I think those who are
perfectionists will appreciate what it can do. Those who are not
technically oriented probably ought to stick with the other existing
inksets, at least until there are curves and ICCs available. It will print
in an "EZ" mode with no profiles, but that is not the point of the inkset at
all. More control, not less, is what I'm after.

Additionally, it will not print sepia, so those who like to print that warm
should stick to UT2 or UT7.

The inkset is basically a way to get control of both the Lab a* and b* axes
within a narrow B&W neutral zone from carbon to cold to mild selenium. I'll
be posting graphs that show the ink ranges soon.

Hope that helps a little.

Every one will need to prepare the curves-profiles by himself of just
arrange them starting from a standard profile? If I understand I will
need a profile for every combination of printer/paper. But if 2
people will use the some combination of printer/paper they will need
2 different profiles or will use the same profile?
For preparing a profile is enought a scanner or I will need something
more?
The sistem will work with the standard epson driver or with a RIP?

I don't print sepia. But printing in a neutral tone which differences
I will find from UT7 (with a 2100)

No, once I and others have had the time to make the curves and ICCs, they'll
work on others' printers as well as any canned profile. However, I
recommend people buy and learn how to use Roy's Create ICC program. Once
they have that, then the curves I've made will be able to be put inside the
ICC and the ICC matched to the particular printer and paper. So, it will
allow everyone to more accurately linearize their systems than the use of
any canned profile or curve allows.

...

I think the ColorVision Print Fix Pro is currently the most cost effective,
really good system. It's about $500. A scanner can be used, but it's a
compromise.

I'm making curves for the Epson driver. RIPs will, of course, work fine as
long as the user knows how to profile with one. Actually, the LK in k2
printers is rather a waste in B&W systems. I might at some point move to a
rip for the k2s so that I can use another ink there.

I believe it's only in bulk quantities at present.

Paul, is this an inkset where you'd print on glossy papers by not using the K?

Yes, it handles glossy papers very well with Eboni installed.
