UT7 inkset

UT7 inkset

2006-05-12 by steveh0607

Hello Everyone,

I was previously considering the 1280 with the UT2 and decided against it. I'm now
looking at converting my 2200 as a dedicated Black and White printer.

Can anyone with first hand experience tell me the pros and cons of using the UT7 inkset
with Eboni Black on glossy papers with the Roark curves? I know there are curves for
several good matte papers but I like the look and depth of glossy's.

Thanks again, Steve

Steve you may also want to look into Paul's new inkset. Read about it here:

Steve,

Eboni makes a mess on glossy papers. The blacks (literally) look like
soot, and they rub off easily at the slightest touch, when you stack
prints, etc.

You need to switch to photo black on glossy paper.

Or take Ed's advice and use Paul's new UT-3D inkset. Paul says it uses
the diluted (light black) glossy inks to make full strength black
(sounds silly, but it works). UT-3D can't do sepia, so if that's
important to you, stick with UT-7 and swap the PK and MK carts as
necessary to accommodated different papers.

It's correct that Eboni doesn't work on glossy papers, but Paul's glossy UT7
curves cut out the black and essentially use C and M as the black inks,
which works really well. I get around 2.2 on Epson Premium Semigloss with
these curves.

You might be able to get an additional 0.1 or 0.2 dmax if you switch to a
dedicated PK ink and make some custom curves, otherwise there isn't much
advantage to changing carts.

I also like to use a Gloss Optimizer in the yellow position. That way I get
less gloss differential in the highglights.

professional and I don't have the equipment or know-how to make profiles (yet). So, I
think I'll start with the UT7 since there are ready made curves, then save up some money
to get profiling equipment and have a go at it. Hopefully, it'll be fun to learn how to do
this!

Thanks for the advice. I'll try both the PK and Eboni to see what the difference is.

I have a few curves and ICCs posted at
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/UT-3D_Downloads.html

Note for the 220 how many glossy papers appear to use the same profile. I
assume that will be the case for other printers also.

The 2200 may lag a bit in profiles. I'll try to get the 220 supported first
so that it can be a test bed for those who might be interested and want to
see how the system works.

Although in my general UT-3D PDF at
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/UT-3D_Readme.pdf I note that most 6 and 7 ink
printers will work with the new inkset, next week I'll see if the inkset
works in the 2400. There has been a special request for coverage in k3
machines; so that group may move in front of the 2200.

I've been able to get the UT-3D dmax using the 2 dark gray inks up to equal
the PK for the papers & printers I've compared.

ps The EZN for the C86 works like a dream. Your suggested "profiles"
are almost dead on to what I want! I've only had to tweak them a bit
to personalize them.
