Silver Rag and 2400

2006-07-05 by Clayton Jones

Hello All,

I have just posted a new article on using Silver Rag with the 2400,
and it includes a detailed evaluation of the paper. I'm pretty
impressed with it, but there are definitely some issues. It discusses
pros and cons in several areas: Tone and ABW Settings, Paper Color,
Dmax, Resolution, Glare, Surface Texture, Gloss Differential and Handling.

The article is #9b at the link below.

Regards,
Clayton

Silver Rag and 2400

Everyone

My favorite printer is the 2400 and my favorite paper is the Crane Museo Silver Rag. My problem is that they don't seem able to get along. I'm on my third 2400 because of paper feed problems. In every case I have been able, for a while, to feed the Silver Rag (300 gsm) but rarely without special treatment. With my third machine, a replacement refurb, the feed worked well, for a while, but now it refuses to accept the Silver Rag in the rear feed, where it belongs, but accepts it, grudgingly (requiring a slight nudge) in the top feed. From my experience it seems that forcing Silver Rag through the 2400 will, in time, damage the feed mechanism. I hope I am wrong. I would like to know if others are having the same experience or if my experience is just a fluke. Have any of you run a lot of Crane Silver Rag through a 2400? What problems, if any, did you encounter?

Olaf

Have you tried the "Thick" setting in the Utilities panel of the
printer? That seemed to work better for me with 300 gsm Entrada.

I have also had feeding problems with certain papers, including SR
which I use a fair amount of. I have a theory - untested thus far -
that the coating on SR gums up the rollers on the feeding mechanism, as
matte papers don't usually cause problems. I don't think it breaks the
printer per se, it just means that periodic cleaning is required to
maintain optimumfeeding and printing performance.

Please let me know how it turns out.
