Epson 220 BO prints very light

Epson 220 BO prints very light

2006-07-28 by simonrcameron

I have an Epson R220 with standard inks with Olmec 260gsm Gloss Paper.

When I print in colour the results are fine, but with BO the results
are teribly light in density.

The file is 16 bit greyscale

When printing from PS the file has its corrct icc paper profile

The media type selected in the print dialog is Epson ultra glossy and
under colour management the print dialog Color Controls option (dont
know why the Color Controls turns it self on when printing greyscale)
is currenty set to gamma 2.2 (gives the darkest output)

I would welcome some advice on where to go next

Thanks in advance

I have a lot of experience with BO printing but I have no answer for
you because you are using the Epson dye ink on glossy paper. My
experience is with pigment ink on matte paper. So any settings I
might suggest wouldn't apply.

The central issue as I see it from your description is the print
doesn't match the screen image (I'm assuming the screen image looks
good to you). Getting good WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), or
having the print and screen image match, is one of the main challenges
in setting up any system. There are two approaches: making the print
match the screen, or making the screen match the print. I don't know
what to suggest, but there are some detailed articles on BO printing
at the link below (#3 and #4). They focus on pigment ink and matte
paper, but the underlying principles are the same. Reading them would
certainly help in understanding how the system works and perhaps would
give some clues on how to adjust your setup.

Regards,
Clayton
