R220 Ink Change / Cleaning?

R220 Ink Change / Cleaning?

2006-08-22 by antoinedese

A very green newbie here, with a 220. I've read the material on the
MIS web site regarding ink compatability, but I'm still unclear on
just what needs to be done in the way of cleaning/purging/etc when
changing inks. I'm currently using the UT-R2 ink set, with Eboni.

What, other than cart replacement, do I need to do to change from:

1) Eboni-PK and vice versa in the black position?
2) Neutral to warm and vice versa in the color positions?

And while the 220 will probably remain dedicated to B&W, what would I
need to do to install the standard epson dye carts? And to go from the
standard epson dye-based carts back to UT-R2?

Thanks for any enlightenment...

I've been having the same questions, Antoine, but I'll bet I'm even
greener than you, however! What I want to do is something similar...
put an Eboni black cart in the black dye position, leaving the color
dyes where they are and pring with BO printing. Question is, do I
replace the Eboni cart with the dye black, or will the Eboni black be
happy printing with the dye color carts?

Not exactly your issue but related... let's hope someone helps us out!

Thanks for posting this question,

Paul

Hello Antoine and Paul,

When I swapped out the original color carts for R2 I didn't do
anything special. The normal cleaning cycle was all it needed. I
have never put the color carts back in, so I can't say whether the
reverse would be the same. I guess you'll just have to try and see.

As for using Eboni with the dye colors, I haven't tried that, but my
guess is that it would not work well, for possibly two reasons: 1)
mixing pigment and dye, and 2) Eboni is very different in color and
probably would mess up the darker colors. If you want to do color and
BW you might consider putting MIS color pigments in it (if they make
some, if not, you might have to use QTR to make it work). If you want
the dye colors, then having two printers might be the way to go.

Clayton

Nothing needs to be done.

Some do nothing. I find that Eboni can be troublesome if there is dye on
the parking pad. So, I'd rinse off the pad.

While it's not a compatibility issue, some residual inks are in that head.
The colors will affect the B&W for a while. I'd print a few purge pattern
pages to clear the head as soon as I changed ink.

Transparencies?

2006-08-25 by Frank Vincent

Paul,

Can a person print on transparent film on a 220? Color or Black and White?
I would like to try, and did one, but the ink ran all around.

Thanks for your help.

Frank

Thanks, Clayton,

OK, how about this scenario: I keep the color dye carts in their
original position (not as good as pigment, I know, but ok for the
occasional family non-archival snapshot), with the original black cart
in its slot. Then, when I want to do BO, I put the Eboni in its place.
Simple! Also, Paul suggests it may be necessary to wipe off the pads
during this exchange.

But how do I store the black cart I'm not using?

I'd really not go with two printers just yet... not enough room, for
one thing.

Regards,

Paul

Every time you swap the cart the printer will do a cleaning cycle
(which uses a lot of ink), so it's a very inefficient and expensive
way to work. If you don't mind that and don't mind doing the extra
cleaning work then try it for awhile and see how you like it.

Clean any stray ink off the poppet valve and put it in a plastic bag.

Clayton

I print on overhead transparency film occasionally, and just treat it like a
glossy paper. There are probably different types, so be sure the material
in designed for inkjet printers. Also, be sure you’re printing on the
correct side.

I take your points, Clayton, thanks.

Well, I'm thinking of re-inking carts, so maybe the expense won't be
too bad. Been doing it on my HP's for years, so am somewhat used to
this drill.

Paul
