Digital BW, The Print

After seeing some gorgeous prints made by the MIS inks, I decided to
purchase an Epson 1280 and the inks. I started out with the UT2 inks
and the Eboni black. I purchased the Hahnemuhle photo rag. I already
owned PhotoShop C2

I was very disapointed with the initial results. I tried the curves,
but the pictures looked too solarized. I tried the epson sliders, and
it looked better but still flat. I spent lots of time and a cartridge
trying to get a nice, sharp print.

Then all of a sudden the blacks started being too black, too dark, no
detail at all. Now I am just trying to get back where I was. 

Any thoughts? Help would be much appreciated.

Julie,

I also have a 1280 and UT2 inks.  I am totally satisfied with the 
results.  But I print using QTR.  I know many have had success using 
curves, but I did not get results I was happy with.  I'm sure it was 
my fault the prints were not good since so many people get good 
results that way.  However, I simply cannot get a bad print using 
QTR as long as I set the options correctly.  Since you already have 
the 1280 and inks, and since you can download QTR for free and try 
it out, you might consider giving it a try.  For $50, it's one of 
the best buys you'll make.

I also use MIS UT2 inks with my Epson 1280 on -- in my case -- Crane's 
Museo Silver Rag.  I had the same problems you had until I switched from 
Eboni black to Photo Black ink.  Now my prints are beautiful!  The Eboni 
black might not be compatible with your paper.

Eboni black  is correct for photo rag.  I also use the 1280 with 
UT2.  Currently I usually use QTR with good results, but I have also 
gotten excellent results with Paul's curves.  Be sure you follow the 
direction very carefully. There is probably a wrong setting 
somewhere. 
It is also possible you got a bad cartridge, but I don't think I have 
ever heard of problems liek yours from that.  If you don't get up and 
running, return here with a detailed description of your procedures 
and someone is sure to help.
