QTR ICC Profiles and Lightroom

QTR ICC Profiles and Lightroom

2006-09-26 by Douglas, Keith

I was experimenting with QTR ICC profiles again to see if I could go
from RAW to Print completely in Lightroom Beta 4. First I made an ICC
with QTR-Create-ICC. Lightroom wouldn't even list it. Then a
re-created it with QTR-Create-ICC-RGB. Lightroom sees the profile but
will not use it to print: the message is something like "profile is
missing or invalid".

Note that window's doesn't like either profile either (right-click on
file, select Install-Profile gives "Invalide Profile" message), but PS
will print with either ICC.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Keith

Keith, You may need to use the "install" from the drop down method within
windows. This happened on several ICC profiles when I first started with
Beta 3. Right click should bring up the install when the profile is
highlighted.

Eric,

Yes, that doesn't work. Windows also says "invalid profile". But if I
manually copy the ICC's to the windows profiles directory
(c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\color), photoshop sees the profiles
and will print correctly with them.

Have you posted your quandary to the Adobe LAB site for Beta 4 feed back?
Sorry I missed your more complete question. Did you try a reboot after the
attempt with Lightroom? I had it do a strange lock up with a convert and
then open in CS. They may have a bug in there. I'll see if I can repeat your
try. It will be tomorrow before I get that done.

I haven't tried rebooting. I'll give it a try. It is beta afterall.
I'll also post on the Adobe site.

Re: QTR ICC Profiles and Lightroom

2006-09-27 by Roy Harrington

I haven't used Lightroom before but I just downloaded it to try.
Unfortunately I've also run into quite a few weird occurances.

Since Lightroom does not appear to support grayscale, you are probably right
to try the RGB version of the QTR profiles. I received both the "invalid" error and
also quite a few complete crashes of the whole program. I also decided to see
what would happen with an ordinary Epson RGB profile - not that the results would
be any good. But it crashed as well. So I suspect it's because of some grayscale
issue rather than the profile. The crashes are all in the OS X Print Manager so
help from Apple and/or Adobe will probably be needed.

I've played with various combinations and I think I've found a workaround for
custom made QTR ICC profiles. It doesn't work with the generic QTR-RGB Matte Paper.

Here's what I did:
1) Make your custom ICC using the RGB version as before.
2) In Lightroom, select the Epson driver as the printer. Setup the ICC profile in
the Color Management section. Hit Print.
3) Instead of printing in the Print Dialog, hit Preview. This will output a pdf file to the
Preview program.
4) Now you can print from Preview, select the Quad printer and all the options you
want and print.

The idea is Lightroom applies the RGB profile as normally, and Preview handles the
conversion to grayscale.

Well, I am glad that I didn't get to spending time on this and let the
really knowledge base step forward : )

Re: QTR ICC Profiles and Lightroom

2006-09-27 by Bob Marsolais

Roy and company,

I have had the same experience of QTR-generated profiles not being
accepted by a program. In my case, the program is Picture Window Pro,
my editor of choice. Perhaps there is a something slightly off in the
QTR profiles that Photoshop does not catch but others are? QTR
appears to be the common denominator.

I use and love QTR. My 1280 gives much smoother prints with it than
the Epson driver. I just wish I could use B&W profiles in my workflow!
