There is a file in the QTR download called "Ideal Density." It plots ideal density against dmax. But the dmax range given is relatively low, what you'd get from matte papers. Where would one find the ideal density values for papers with a higher dmax, such as SR and Innova F? Ed

What is an "ideal" density ramp? Shouldn't matching the monitor be a primary goal? Are these "ideal" densities used by any standard working space? In the past I argued in favor of the linear Lab distribution that these more traditional B&W approaches use, but that was in an era of 8 bit files where I thought the rather standard Gray Gamma 2.2 "wasted" precious scale in its compressed shadows. With high bit files being the norm now, I've switched my recommendations to using that standard space and its non-linear ramp. I'm not sure I've ever seen a chart of density or Lab L distributions for Gray Gamma 2.2 (or other common standard space, for that matter). I label some of my 21-step test files with selected GG 2.2 densities that I've found just by measuring test strips that were produced by "color managed" workflows like those that use Roy's "Create ICC" program. Beware the wild goose chase. If I recall correctly, those "ideal" density values were just linear steps of L* converted into density figures. Linearity in a final printed greyscale ramp is not at all "ideal". It is ideal for the intermediary step of linearizing a printer before profiling but the end product but, in order to be aethetically pleasing, will need some curvature in the greyscale ramp because of (in particular) the relatively weak blacks we get else suffer a flat look. If one were to produce a set of ideal density values for a given paper white and ink black it should account for media relativity (adjustment for paper white) and black point compensation.
