I have an Epson R220 that I will be converting to B&W using MIS inks. Can anyone tell me if this printer can use the thicker fine art papers, or am I limited to the more traditional ink jet papers? Thanks, Paul S. Baxter

Paul, I've not had much luck with thick papers (300gsm or more) with the R220 even though I've clicked on the Maintenance Tab, then "Printer and Option Information" and check "Thick Paper and envelopes". I've tried guiding the paper by hand, using only one sheet or several as backing, even foam core. Thick paper engages on first try only once in a while. Cheers, Andre

I have three R200 printers, and they all don't do well with fine art papers, so I think this is characteristic of the beast. I suspect the R220 isn't going to be any better. The problem is with feeding the paper -- if you can manually coax the paper into the printer, it will print 190 - 300 gsm papers without smearing. The print driver actually has a setting for thicker papers/envelopes that changes the distance between the print head and the paper, but this won't help with the funky paper feed. My R200s often misfeed even supported papers like Epson Enhanced Matte and plain bond. I am satisfied with the print quality -- I have an R200 dedicated to B&W and have used MIS UT-FSN and UT-R2. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "paulsbaxter" <paulsbaxter@...> wrote:

I have two R220s, one for b&w and the other color. I start to have problems at 300 gsm. Crane Silver rag (300 gsm) mis-feeds about one time out of five and a 315 gsm matte paper I use has to be manually aided at start everytime but it is something I got used to easily. You just have to re-feed the paper and always feed them individually. I haven't tried anything above the 315 gsm which is textured and quite stiff. Once started, all the papers feed without problem with the exception of Crane Silver Rag and occasionally Epson Premium Glossy. The problem there can be on prints where the image runs close to the trailing edge. There is a little curl to the paper coming out of the box, especially in the Crane SR. The curl has to be shaped out manually to keep the print head from catching the edge after the trailing edge of the paper has left the back feed mechanism and there are two or three passes of the print head left to go. The curl is between the long edges, 90 degrees to a typical roll curl so that may happen on any printer. The denser the print the more it happens, but at nearly two bucks a sheet there is a quick incentive to sort that problem out and it is not insurmountable. It's a great b&w printer by the way with lots of inkset options.
