I'm a bit late to this party, but here goes... a couple of years ago I
started with a C86 and Epson OEM inks. The C86 was gently used when I
got it, but it made great BO prints right from the start. I ordered the
MIS EZ-N inks and found that the prints made using that inkset, while
very nice-looking, weren't very different in appearance (almost
identical, in fact) to the BO prints I had made. However, when I tried
BO with the MIS Eboni ink, I got banding that I couldn't get rid of.
That C86 recently died, and I purchased a C88+ to replace it. I'm still
on the Epson OEM inks that came with the printer, but so far the BO
looks pretty good. (It'll need a curves adjustment, but there's no
banding.) I agree with Adam that there is probably a lot of unit-to-unit
variability.
