See if you can buy the Umax by itself (with transparency adapter) it will cost you about $600.00. The additional $500.00 in your post above is for a software bundle. I'm not sure what the DMAX rating is on the Epson but on the UMAX it is 3.4 -- pretty desent for a $600.00 scanner.

Don,

I have both scanners already. I am finding a big difference between them but
it's just difference, one is not better or worse - yet.
The Epson's SilverFast SE does a good job with getting the exposure and
color very near correct. Preliminary tests indicate that the Epson 2450 only
does well at 1200 DPI. Interpolated (1200 to 2400) scans from either machine
look as good as Epson's 2400 DPI scans - not what I hoped for.

Alan,

why don't you test both scanners with Vuescan? This should reduce
variables...

Alex,

Good idea - I don't know if there is a VueScan version for the 2450 yet.
Does that mean I have to start over again? :-)

Alan,

I'm pretty sure Vuescan does support the 2450, don't know about the UMax but
you can easily check on Vuescan docs ( www.hamrick.com
<http://www.hamrick.com> ).
That said, I don't think you have to repeat all of your tests, maybe just
the most relevant ones. Or maybe all of them, after all it should be fun :-)

Alex,

Regarding tests - I highly recommend to anyone that testing combined with
posting results and consulting with more knowledgeable people on these lists
is a terrific learning experience. I learned more about my Umax scanner
testing the Epson. I say don't just sit there test something!
