Derek's Newbie Question(s)

Derek's Newbie Question(s)

2007-02-17 by Derek Hamlet

I am a relative newbie to digital B&W printing although I've had a
wet darkroom for over 35 years.
I've been following this list for a while and am bedazzled by all the
talk of curves, custom inks etc.
I remain committed to B&W. Color is fun, but never tugs at my heartstrings.
I thought of starting with a high end Epson printer, but then decided
that it might be best to walk before running.
So, after reading some of Paul Roark's comments I've opted for a
cheapie (but new) C88.
Until it arrives, I'd like to read up.
I've got Paul's sites bookmarked and that should keep me busy.
However, if anyone would care to share links to other practical "how
to" sites I'd appreciate it.
Many thanks.
P. S. I just shake my head when I look at my Nikon N90 just sitting
there. Oh well, may be I'll get nostalgic and shoot some film one day.

I'm (maybe) one step ahead of you, Derek. However, I opted for the six-
color / R340 configuration.

In addition to Paul's material, dig into Clayton's--I find that reading
both have helped me get going. Here's that link--

FWIW, my configuration--complete with R340, a CIS, and the equivalent
of about eleven cartridge sets has a net cost of roughly $350.00, and I
am getting excellent results from the MIS inks while learning.

For software, I've chosen Photoshop Elements 5.02.

Thank you Jim.
I already have all the Adobe Photo software as I play with graphics a
lot for no other purpose than my own enjoyment; making graphics for T
shirts, custom decals for friend's motorcycles, wine labels - stuff like that.
Enjoyable as that is thoug, there is nothing quite like producing a
black and white photo that tugs somehow at the heartstrings.
I will check out Clayton's stuff. Thanks.
