I just replaced my bottles of Cone ink with the MIS ink and printed
away. It will take a lot of prints before you see the new MIS inks. You
can suck about 15cc's of ink from the cartridges through the center tube
in the bottlecaps, and then replace that with the new ink of the same
position. I've done that too, just recently when I replaced the VM black
with a DYE version of pure black. The prints now have a beautiful black.
(MIS dye ink). No metamerism, but I have to do the south window test to
see about longevity. If you want the MIS inks to look like the Piezo
inks, use their FS inkset. If you do this, you probably won't have make
many prints to clear out the old ink, the tones are very similar.

It doesn't sound like you replaced the CIS cartridge? This is what you
really should do. New cartridges are about $35. It took me about 30mintues
to flush the lines, replace the cartridge and reload with new ink (this was
with two color ink sets...I'm still running PiezoBW in my VW machines). I
don't think it is a good idea to mix inks in a single
cartridge...particularly if you are then trying to use VM profiles.

Mark,

Just use the MIS FS inks, nothing else to do. They are "plug and play" with the Piezo Inks.

Within a couple weeks or so I should be nearing the end of the current
supply of Cone Piezo B&W inks and I am thinking about switching to
something else in the MIS line. I am currently using a CIS from
NoMoreCarts and I was wondering form those who have experience in doing
this, how difficult is it or how do you go about cleaning out the Cone
inks from the CIS when making such a switch? Is it better to just get a
new CIS unit and start from scratch? What has been your experience?

Also, which of the MIS products for quadtone printing comes closest to
the Cone look, the Original, the Full Spectrum or the Variable set?

  Thanks,
  Mark

Michael,

Is it safe to assume, that if someone is switching from PiezoBW to
MIS FS inks, that they would not need to adopt the MIS workflow,
rather, they would continue to the use the PiezoBW plug-in for
Photoshop?

Secondly, are people making this switch because of economics or
because they want a cooler tone than what the PiezoBW inks generate?

James,

(I won't presume to answer for Mike, but since I'm on the West Coast I might
be able to answer your questions faster.)

You wrote:

>Is it safe to assume, that if someone is switching from PiezoBW to
>MIS FS inks, that they would not need to adopt the MIS workflow,
>rather, they would continue to the use the PiezoBW plug-in for
>Photoshop?

Yes. The FS inks are formulated to work with the Piezo software. I
currently have the new FS-Neutral inks in my 1160, and I am printing with
Piezo software.

MIS has alternative workflows on its webpage -- the Woolf workflow for FS --
for those who want to use the inks but do not want to pay for the software.
However, if you have Piezo software, use it. It does a great job. (The
blacks still don't match the Epson black on my 1160, however.)

(One of the list members also recently posted a very good RGB workflow for
the 1160 and PC with the FS/Piezo inks.)

>Secondly, are people making this switch because of economics or
>because they want a cooler tone than what the PiezoBW inks generate?

I'd guess economics and lack of clogs are the main reasons people switch.
The color of the standard FS inks is really quite close to Piezo. It's a
little less green, or much less green if your system is afflicted with the
"greenies" (which mine, in retrospect, apparently was).

The new FS-Neutral is going to move color, tone and other characteristics up
the list of reasons to switch. Basically, it will give a color similar to a
lightly-selenium-toned silver print (a toned Kodak Polymax Fine Art fiber
print was used as a reference). So, people wanting neutral prints but the
Piezo workflow will be able to have both.

Mark,

I switched to MIS to do piezo for the $value and the neutral color. The only
change I made from the regular piezo settings for EAM was changing gama to 1.1.
to get a smooth step tablet. I think you will find it takes little more than
a bit of tweaking of dot gain and gama for various papers and types of
images but no more than regular piezo inks.

The answers to your question are as follows,

Yes, you just switch over and use the Piezo work flow.

It seems that people are making the switch for a number of reasons...
1. Economic - The MIS inks are substantially less expensive.
2. Clogging - I believe for the most part people are tired of the Piezo clogging issues.
3. Tone - Although cooler, I am not sure this is a major consideration for swicthing to the FS inks.
