PNG Format

PNG Format

2007-05-01 by Richard Smallfield

Hi,
I have some very large images, over 200mb and want to save images that I've finished work on, in a smaller format that tiff, to save disc space. I've saved some as maximum quality jpeg, but png, being lossless, is attractive.

The problem is that it doesn't allow me to embed an icc profile with it (I'm using PS7). What detrimental effect (if any) will this have if I have to reassign QTR Grey Lab or QTR GRey Matte again upon opening it?

thanks,
Richard

You will lose nothing by re-assigning a profile to it. However, it is
up to you to keep track of what profile it really is. (One year from
now, will you remember?) :-)

Also, PNG as I recall is limited to 8 bits per pixel component.
(Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.) That's why I don't recommend it.

I still recommend saving your master files as 16-bit TIFFs or PSDs. In
the former case, enable ZIP compression to save space.

Gigabytes are cheap these days (about a quarter per gig). Certainly
less than 1 mL of ink. Maybe consider another hard drive! :-)

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
