Luminous Rant

Luminous Rant

2007-07-29 by Christopher L. Johnston

I see Reichman and Schewe are up to it again with a 7 hour Hi Def video
tutorial, I have to admit I was stoked when I read about it, reached for my
credit card, overcoming my hand to wallet reflex and then I finished reading
it, available only as a down load, 8 zip files 250-300mb per. Do these
hosers have any idea how &*#$ing long 250mb takes on a 64kb line? Living in
Africa where I count myself lucky to even have an internet connection I find
myself increasingly frustrated as the OSW (outside world) moves more and
more towards huge downloads, web pages with enormous files, streaming this
and streaming that, all this @#$% loads fast when you live in broadband land
but for us in the boonies we can only stand like kids with our noses pressed
against the candy store window. So when you load those files don't forget
your poor cousins in the third world who are just a couple steps removed
from a tin cans and a ball of string. I guess the upside is I've got way
better photo ops...

Chris:

I live in the land where the Internet originated; Washington County,
Maine, USA in particular. On a good day, I may have a 45 kbps
connection - never 64 kbps. One need not live in Namibia to be
confounded by the fact that many Web sources are predicated on high
speed connections.

Did you contact them, explain your situation and ask if they could
mail a DVD instead?

I am constantly banging heads with the web people at work that want to
just up the bit rate of our radio stream, add stupid flash to web
pages, etc....

I do understand what your complaint is about, just because many more
people have high speed now doesn't mean that we should stuff the pages
with so much garbage that only the high speed users can see them. Less
is still more!

It is the same with many of the computer programs as well. Just because they
can add a neat graphic function, they do. Processing speed goes down and
soon that Super Duper Dual processor and Massive HD is crawling along
stuffed to the brim garbage.

Eric,
I dare to disagree with you on this one.

Rob, are you thinking that the code of most programs has been well thought
out and trimmed to run with the least amount of fluff? While it is true that
many of the programs are very graphic intensive, I think it strange that as
processing speeds increase and HD space increases that a seemingly equal
amount of bloat appears in programs, web sites, and even email. And they all
want to be "the" program that you use as a default and running in the back
ground. How many processes do you really need running at any one time?

Ok class! Which 3rd party imaging program fits on a floppy? Class? Class?

It's my number one preview program and handles 80pct of my correction
problems, including RGB to MONO.

The internet went to hell when MacroMedia fed us FLASH. Push
Technology on my bandwith. Theft in any language. Web pages are meant
to be Digital B&W! Right ? : )

Irfanview !

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
